For its latest Hammer Projects commission, the Hammer Museum gives Chicago-based painter Mike Cloud a room built from bare stretcher bars — the wooden armature usually hidden behind a canvas — reassembled into polygons, stars, and open frameworks that push painting off the wall and toward sculpture. Objects surface from fields of thick, troweled oil, so that each work reads at once as picture and as accumulation, a container for whatever the artist has pressed into its skin. Cloud’s paintings ask what a painting is supposed to conceal, then decline to conceal any of it.

Von Lintel Gallery pairs two German artists who set the camera aside entirely to ask what a photograph really is — Floris Neusüss, whose life-size photograms registered bodies and objects as ghostly silhouettes burned directly onto light-sensitive paper, and Christiane Feser, who folds, cuts, and pierces her prints into shallow reliefs that hover between picture and sculpture. Placed side by side, the two make a quiet argument that photography’s real subjects were always light, paper, and surface — the trace and the sheet it lands on — rather than whatever sits in front of a lens. It is a show about the medium caught touching the world with no shutter in between.

At Craig Krull Gallery, Holly Roberts continues her decades-long practice of painting directly onto photographs until the two media can no longer be pried apart, figures and animals surfacing in thick, worked oil from grounds that began as ordinary prints. Witness treats the photograph not as a finished image but as raw material — a surface to be buried, scraped back, and rebuilt until what emerges is equal parts document and dream. The pictures hold the uncanny stillness of both at once: the camera’s fixed instant and the slow deliberation of the painter’s hand.

Pablo Picasso — Portraits in Disguise

On the third floor of BCAM, LACMA gathers a focused survey of Pablo Picasso’s portraiture around a single restless idea — the face as something to be masked and remade rather than faithfully recorded. Across paintings and works on paper, lovers, friends, and the artist himself dissolve into harlequins, minotaurs, and geometric ciphers, each likeness a costume tried on and discarded. The exhibition makes the case that for Picasso the portrait was never about resemblance at all, but about the endless capacity of a face to become someone — or something — else.

François Ghebaly hands Patrick Jackson the full gallery for All Signs Fail, a four-part installation that inflates the language of the street to the scale of a public monument — a towering billboard of watching eyes, a run of altered bus-shelter posters, a mother-and-child statue, and a single looming structure anchoring the room. Jackson borrows the visual grammar of advertising and civic signage precisely in order to jam it, staging a city that has lost the thread of its own messaging, where every sign points somewhere and none quite arrives. In West Adams, Shoshana Wayne Gallery gives Shirley Tse and Dana Berman Duff — working together as Relational — the room for The Universe Breathes Us, where tidal pull and the simple fact of breath are turned into sculpture, sound, and projected film, the invisible forces between bodies rendered almost tangible. Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Beverly Hills winds the clock back too, with William Wegman: Private Show, vintage 1970s photographs and video from the years Wegman was inventing his deadpan conceptual grammar, hung alongside later work that extends it. And in Hollywood, Diane Rosenstein Gallery presents Trophies, David Hicks’ new glazed ceramic vessels — his ongoing clippings series pushed toward the fruit-heavy, the swollen, the almost-overripe.

Around these highlights the week fills in with a downtown frieze of 360 portraits, a forty-artist survey of landscape and escape, Douglas Gordon’s looped Zidane, a Punjabi sculptor’s first show outside India, and a one-night sound sculpture in Pasadena.

Vielmetter Los Angeles opens the summer with Ongoingness, a nineteen-artist group exhibition built around Pope.L’s Heaven (Vielmetter Version) and pitched as a reflection on the United States at its 250th anniversary — a subject too large and too contested for any single voice, handed here to nineteen. Across installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media, the show reads less as a thesis than as a chorus, its artists circling questions of belonging, myth, and unfinished national business without ever agreeing on the answers. It is the kind of exhibition that treats a country the way one might treat a difficult family — with attention, with argument, and without the comfort of a conclusion.

François Ghebaly turns back to a formative moment with Rapido, a focused presentation of rarely exhibited installation and works on paper that Alexis Smith made in the 1970s — the decade when her signature language of spliced text, found imagery, and the sun-bleached poetry of American vernacular first cohered. Made before the wall-spanning narrative installations that would define her, these early works catch the artist mid-invention, cutting and arranging the country’s throwaway culture into something wry and unexpectedly tender. Seen now, they read as both period document and origin story.

At its West Adams space, Shoshana Wayne Gallery presents The Universe Breathes Us, a collaborative exhibition by Shirley Tse and Dana Berman Duff working under the shared name Relational, where the invisible traffic between bodies — tidal pull, shared air, the mechanics of breath — is translated into sculpture, sound, projected film, video, and installation. The two treat connection not as metaphor but as physics, building an environment in which the forces that ordinarily pass unnoticed between people are slowed down and made perceptible. The result asks the viewer to feel, rather than merely observe, the medium they are suspended in.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art mounts Private Show, a gathering of rare vintage photographs and video from the 1970s — the years when William Wegman was working out the deadpan conceptual grammar that would make his name — shown alongside later works that expand those early strategies. Before the polished, widely-loved Weimaraner portraits, Wegman was a restless maker of quick, funny, formally sharp gestures on paper, tape, and film, and this exhibition returns to that scrappier, more experimental register. It is a chance to see the wit before it hardened into a signature.

David Hicks: Trophies

Diane Rosenstein Gallery gives David Hicks his third solo show with Trophies, a suite of new glazed ceramic vessels drawn from his ongoing clippings series — forms that borrow the language of botany and abundance, swelling toward the ripe, the heavy, and the faintly excessive. Hicks treats the vessel less as a container than as a specimen, each glazed surface pooling and running like fruit caught at the edge of overripeness. Titled Trophies, the works carry a quiet irony about what we choose to keep, preserve, and put on display.

Over in West Hollywood, Regen Projects gives Alex Hubbard the room for Abstract or Regular?, poured and layered surfaces that treat abstraction as a process caught mid-decision — paint behaving like weather, resin like glass. Perrotin answers the season directly with Summerlove Sensation, a group show given over to youthful lust and longing, a dizzying affair with love itself; and at Nonaka-Hill, the late Brazilian-born Angeleno Kenzi Shiokava returns with the totemic assemblages he cut and carved from salvaged wood, railroad ties, and cast-off brooms — memory made vertical. At the Getty Center, Otherworldly Visions gathers the charcoal noirs, lithographs, and luminous late pastels of Odilon Redon, the nineteenth-century French Symbolist who worked at the border between the seen and the dreamed. Flowers hover between botany and apparition, mythological figures surface from fields of velvety black, and color, when it finally arrives in the pastels, feels less like description than like light breaking through a closed eye. Free in the museum’s West Pavilion, the exhibition traces a career spent insisting that the imagination is a place one can actually go.

Michael Kohn Gallery mounts Paintings 1982–2024, a four-decade survey of Mark Innerst’s shimmering, jewel-lit cityscapes and landscapes, where skylines and shorelines dissolve into atmosphere under a light that feels remembered rather than observed. Innerst builds his surfaces in fine, granular layers — often within artist-made frames that seal each picture like a reliquary — so that a river, a bridge, or a stand of trees registers as both crisp and half-hallucinated. Across the decades the work holds a single conviction: that a painting can slow the city down until it glows.

Regen Projects gives Alex Hubbard the room for Abstract or Regular?, new paintings in which poured pigment, resin, and layered gesture are caught mid-decision — abstraction treated less as a finished style than as a process still visibly happening. Hubbard lets his materials behave like weather, pooling and skinning over and pulling against the support, so that each surface reads as a record of the forces that made it. The result is painting that keeps asking its own title’s question and refuses to settle on an answer.

Perrotin answers the season head-on with Summerlove Sensation, a group exhibition given over to youthful love, lust, and longing — what the gallery calls a dizzying affair with love itself. Across media and generations, the assembled artists chase the heat and comedy of desire, from the first glance to the inevitable heartbreak, in a show engineered for the particular delirium of a Los Angeles summer. It is light on its feet and unashamed of it.

Nonaka-Hill stages its second exhibition of Kenzi Shiokava, the late Brazilian-born Angeleno who spent decades transforming salvaged wood, railroad ties, and discarded brooms into totemic sculptures that stand somewhere between guardian figure and grave marker. Carved, charred, and bound, his columns carry the memory of the streets they came from — South Los Angeles lumber and cast-offs raised to the vertical dignity of the sacred. Shown here in concentrated form, the totems feel less made than summoned.

William Turner Gallery marks the centennial of Ed Moses — Ferus Gallery veteran, restless dean of Los Angeles abstraction — with MOSES@100, a survey drawn across the six decades in which he treated the canvas as a laboratory rather than a destination, cracking, layering, dragging, and resurfacing paint until the picture became a record of its own making. Moses never settled into a signature, and the exhibition follows that refusal — grids dissolving into gesture, resin and pigment worried into geologic strata, the hand always testing what a surface can be made to hold. Mounted nearly a decade after his death and staged alongside son Andy Moses’s own light-driven abstractions, the show reads as a city taking the measure of a painter who helped teach it how to look.

California African American Museum | Exposition Park, Los Angeles
Willie Birch: Stories to Tell

The California African American Museum mounts the first career retrospective of Willie Birch, Stories to Tell, tracing nearly six decades of a New Orleans-born artist who has moved from early figurative painting through 1980s papier-mâché sculpture to the large-scale charcoal-and-acrylic works on paper that anchor his recent practice. Organized chronologically, the exhibition turns on Birch’s idea of “retentions” — the ways African traditions persist within Black American music, art, and daily life — and traces that persistence across changes in material as much as subject. Across the galleries the work asks why some cultural memories are kept and others let go, unearthing uncomfortable truths about American identity while holding open the possibility of a more expansive account of the stories we tell.

Moka Lee: Persona Works

In Persona Works, her first US solo exhibition, the South Korean painter Moka Lee treats the face as something assembled for viewing — portraits whose cool, near-photographic polish keeps sliding toward mask, the sitter culled from strangers’ social feeds and reassessed as aesthetic data. Lee builds each surface from a gesso underpainting scored and layered one translucent color at a time, a laminate finish that echoes the pass-by-pass logic of CMYK printing even as it registers the psychological strata her subjects try to conceal. Between the triviality of a selfie and the monumentality of oil paint, Persona Works stages the muddling of person and persona — beautiful, unnerving, and quietly suspicious of its own polish.

Esther Pearl Watson: Celestial Road Trip

Esther Pearl Watson returns to Vielmetter for Celestial Road Trip, a fourth solo built from new paintings and works on paper that map the flora, fauna, and roadside strangeness of her high-desert life around Joshua Tree. Watson works in a folk-narrative register thick with incident — hand-lettered signs, metallic skies, the odd hovering craft — where the everyday desert and the cosmic share a horizon line and neither takes precedence. The pictures read as travelogue and diary at once, tender and faintly deadpan, finding in the scrubland outside the studio door a whole cosmology of small wonders.

Michael John Kelly: NOTHING

Wilding Cran gives Michael John Kelly the room for NOTHING, four large canvases in which oil and acrylic are fractured by broad brushwork and then reassembled through pigment-print collage — the digital process folded back into paint until the two become indistinguishable. Kelly builds abstractions that behave like objects, imagined forms with a stubborn physical presence, drawing in equal measure on science fiction, the history of painting, and the post-punk wall of sound. What emerges is a post-human landscape traced in fragments, the sublime located improbably in the seams where the handmade and the machine-made meet.

Several Eternities in a Day: Form in the Age of Living Materials

The Hammer hands its galleries to twenty-two artists from North, Central, and South America for Several Eternities in a Day, a show built almost entirely from living materials — avocado, cacao, achiote, cochineal, stone, clay, and natural dyes. Organized by Pablo José Ramírez, the exhibition treats these substances as more than pigment or medium: they evolve, decay, drip, crumble, and evaporate, carrying the spirit and memory of Brown and Indigenous worlds in their chemistry. Across large-scale installation, painting, and mixed-media sculpture, the work reframes material itself as a record of the living and a repository of cosmic memory — art that is, quite literally, still changing on the wall.

Fútbol Is Life: Animated Sportraits by Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr.

Timed to the World Cup’s arrival in Los Angeles, LACMA’s Fútbol Is Life gathers the miniature “sportraits” of award-winning animator and visual-effects artist Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr. — meticulous little sculptures and stop-motion animations built from gum wrappers, glue, and paint. Barrois rebuilds iconic moments from women’s and men’s soccer at the scale of a tabletop, bringing a playful, emotional energy to the game’s grace and power. Rather than chasing spectacle or stardom, the show finds the world’s sport in the handmade and the intimate — the beautiful game reassembled one gum wrapper at a time.

The Expanding Field: MOCA’s Collection from the 1940s to 1970s

MOCA draws three decades out of its permanent collection for The Expanding Field, a survey of work from the 1940s through the 1970s that reads as an institution taking stock of the years just before it existed. Organized by senior curator Anna Katz, the show gathers recent acquisitions alongside longtime mainstays — a gallery of Mark Rothko canvases, an I Am painting by Luchita Hurtado, and works by Piet Mondrian, On Kawara, Robert Rauschenberg, Betye Saar, and Anne Truitt among them — to trace the experimentation and global awareness that shaped postwar art in the decades leading up to MOCA’s 1979 founding. It is a collection show that doubles as an argument about how Los Angeles learned to look.

Pace gives Mika Tajima the run of its Los Angeles space for 37 Dimensions, a body of new installation and sculpture that continues the artist’s long project of making data physical — translating the invisible arithmetic that governs bodies, labor, and technology into things you can stand in front of and feel. Tajima has always worked at the seam where the systemic meets the sensuous, and here the language of measurement, sensing, and prediction is pulled out of the screen and given weight, temperature, and surface. What remains is the residue of a system rendered as form — abstraction that carries the fingerprint of the machinery that produced it.

Josh Cloud: Sunken Bust Shimmering Stone

Megan Mulrooney stages Sunken Bust Shimmering Stone, a solo turn by Josh Cloud in which sculpture is allowed to behave like geology — accretion and erosion, the slow chemistry by which stone acquires its shimmer and its scars. Cloud treats the made object as something weathered rather than fabricated, each surface carrying the evidence of pressure and time as if it had been dredged up rather than built. The result is a body of work that feels found: forms poised between figure and mineral, between the sculpted and the merely survived.

In Hollywood, Lisson Gallery gives Spencer Finch his first Los Angeles exhibition — more than fifty new works on paper gathered around a site-specific skylight and a monumental outdoor sculpture, an art built entirely from the way light arrives and the way memory holds it — while a few blocks over Make Room turns its rooms over to Austin Hayman’s Looking for a Friend, paintings of the artist’s actual friends in the actual rooms they inhabit, a quiet argument against the idea of Los Angeles as a city of surfaces. And downtown, Gallery Luisotti mounts a thirty-year survey of Toshio Shibata, whose large-format photographs of dams, spillways, and poured concrete press the infrastructure that disciplines water into something close to abstraction.

Stendahl’s World: Marketing Ancient Mexico and Modern Art in Los Angeles

At the Getty Research Institute, Stendahl’s World reconstructs the career of the Stendahl Galleries — the Los Angeles dealership that, across the middle decades of the twentieth century, sold the young city both Pre-Columbian antiquities and European modern art, often in the same breath. Drawing on the GRI’s archive of correspondence, photographs, catalogues, and objects, the exhibition follows how a single ambitious dealer shaped West Coast taste, moving Aztec and Maya works alongside Picasso and Diego Rivera and helping invent the very idea of Los Angeles as a place where ancient Mexico and the modernist avant-garde might hang on the same wall. It is a portrait of a salesman, and through him, of how a city learns what to collect.

Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity

LACMA traces a hundred years of transformation through clothing in Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity, gathering more than seventy garments and ensembles — among them the cheongsams of Shanghai and Hong Kong whose narrowing silhouettes and shifting cuts register the century’s upheavals as precisely as any written document. Moving from the late imperial period into the modern era, the exhibition reads dress as social history, the female body and what covered it becoming a site where tradition, commerce, colonialism, and emancipation were continuously renegotiated. It is a show about textiles that turns out to be a show about how a culture remade itself, one seam and hemline at a time.

For his first exhibition in Los Angeles, Spencer Finch fills Lisson’s Hollywood space with more than fifty new works on paper, a site-specific skylight installation, and a monumental outdoor sculpture — an art that has always taken light itself as both subject and medium. Balboa of House and Garden extends his decades-long inquiry into perception and memory: the way a particular quality of afternoon light, or the color of a half-remembered sky, can be measured, transcribed, and set down on paper without ever quite being pinned in place. Finch works at the seam where optical science meets feeling, and the result is less a record of what a place looks like than of what it felt like to stand there and pay attention.

Make Room gives Austin Hayman his debut solo presentation with Looking for a Friend, a suite of paintings built not from landmark occasions but from the unremarkable and the repeated — the sheets of a first apartment, a Monday walk taken the same way week after week, the hour light reliably reaches a window. Hayman paints his actual friends in the rooms they actually inhabit, surrounded by the objects that belong to them, each figure carrying the particular warmth of being seen and known. Against the city’s reputation as a place of surfaces and strategic encounters, the show makes its argument quietly and from the inside out: that Los Angeles is finally defined by the people you meet and the ordinary afternoons you spend with them.

Toshio Shibata: Concrete Poetry

Gallery Luisotti gathers more than thirty years of Toshio Shibata’s photographs into Concrete Poetry, a survey of the Japanese photographer’s lifelong attention to the places where engineering meets terrain — dams, spillways, weirs, and the poured-concrete channels built to discipline water as it moves through mountains. Shooting in large format and often from above, Shibata flattens these vast civil structures into nearly abstract fields of pattern and tone, the rush of a spillway reduced to silvered geometry, the hillside behind it pressed into the same plane. The title is exact: this is infrastructure rendered as composition, the unlovely machinery of flood control turned formal, still, and strangely lyrical.

At Nazarian / Curcio, Gabe Cortese’s House Guest gathers some twenty intimately scaled paintings whose narrative unspools across the room rather than within any single frame — a domestic story told in glimpses and held breath. Cortese works small and close, letting the modest dimensions concentrate the tension: interiors and figures that feel observed rather than staged, charged with the particular unease of being a guest in someone else’s space. After the week’s larger institutional voices, the show offers a deliberate contraction of scale, a reminder that a quiet painting can hold as much as a museum wing.

Parker Gallery turns its Hollywood space over to Gerald Jackson’s The Rooftop Paintings at 255 Bowery — a body of canvases made, as the title says, on a Bowery rooftop, carrying the looseness and light of work produced in the open air rather than the studio. Jackson’s improvisatory abstractions read as records of their own making, gesture and color layered with the freedom of painting done outside the usual systems. The exhibition gathers them as a quiet act of recovery, restoring a long-overlooked painter to view.

The most comprehensive survey of Yoko Ono’s work yet seen on the West Coast, Music of the Mind traces six decades of an art built less from objects than from instructions — scores, event scripts, films, and participatory works that hand the act of completion to the viewer. Moving from her early Fluxus circle to the global peace campaigns, the exhibition treats language and sound as sculptural material, a practice in which a single typed sentence can be a composition and silence is something to be performed. The Broad frames Ono not as a footnote to a more famous life but as one of the most radical conceptual artists of her generation — an argument made in whispers, instructions, and the open invitation to imagine.

Thomas Müller: what then pig

At Patricia Sweetow Gallery, Thomas Müller’s what then pig lets loose a covey of small pink ceramic pigs locked in struggle with punctuation, letterforms, and the stray symbols of written language — the artist’s continued inquiry into the physicality of words. The pigs are deadpan stand-ins for human chaos, gifted with reason yet bound to greed and impulse, and it is never quite clear whether they are the victims of language or its willing accomplices. Müller, who chairs the 3D art program at USC, renders the absurd with a sculptor’s precision, turning a barnyard joke into a quietly unsettling meditation on how meaning gets made and unmade.

California African American Museum | Exposition Park, Los Angeles
The Sound of Gordon Parks

Best known as the photographer who chronicled mid-century Black American life, Gordon Parks was also a composer — and The Sound of Gordon Parks is the first exhibition to take that side of him seriously. Developed with the Gordon Parks Foundation and Mario Sprouse, Parks’s longtime musical assistant, the show fills the museum with orchestral works, film scores, and rarely heard demo recordings, building an immersive soundscape around a creative life lived as much in the ear as in the eye. Curated by Justen LeRoy, it reframes a familiar figure as a multidisciplinary artist whose images, it turns out, always had a score running underneath.

Hospital of Emotions — Now On View in Los Angeles

A building within the St. Vincent Behavioral Health Campus has been transformed into a living museum of human emotion. Hospital of Emotions brings together 70 artists across 80 rooms and four floors, each room dedicated to a single emotion — from joy and love to fear, anger, hope, sadness, gratitude, and resilience. The artists work with the existing architecture — corridors, patient rooms, operating theatres, and nurses’ stations — so that the hospital itself becomes part of the artwork.

Daido Moriyama’s first major Los Angeles exhibition gathers the grainy, high-contrast street photography that made him one of the defining figures of postwar Japanese image-making — restless black-and-white frames shot on the move, where the camera behaves less like a recording device than a predator’s eye. The Hunter takes its title from that posture: Moriyama prowling the city for the accidental, the blurred, the half-seen, treating photography as an act of pursuit rather than composition. The prints carry the texture of their making — smeared light, hard grain, a world caught at speed — and Peter Fetterman’s Bergamot Station gallery frames that instinct as a single sustained chase.

David Zwirner in Melrose Hill/Hollywood reprises one of Southern California’s most consequential movements — Light and Space, the 1960s and ‘70s investigation into perception, atmosphere, and the physical behavior of light — and asks what it means to a generation of artists working now. The 21st Century Version gathers work that treats light not as subject but as material, with surfaces, volumes, and installations calibrated to the way the eye adjusts, doubts, and fills in what it cannot quite resolve. The exhibition reads as both homage and argument: that the region’s defining contribution to postwar art was never a style but a method of attention, one the current century has only made more urgent.

Keith Tyson: The Generative Universe

Keith Tyson has built a career on the conviction that the universe is not a fixed image but a generative system — a set of rules running forward into endless variation — and The Generative Universe gathers roughly three decades of painting, sculpture, and mixed media that test that idea against the discipline of the studio. Chance, mathematics, and material entropy collide across the work, with canvases that read like cosmological diagrams and objects that seem to have been grown rather than made, each one a snapshot of process caught mid-iteration. The exhibition argues, across its full sweep, that creation is less authorship than cultivation — the artist as a node in a system larger than any single hand.

Lyne Lapointe: In the Mood for Deviance

Lyne Lapointe works against the grain of the pristine surface, building images on salvaged wood, antique paper, and weathered material whose histories remain legible beneath the paint, and In the Mood for Deviance turns that method toward the body and its refusals. The exhibition reads as a quietly insurgent meditation — figures and fragments rendered on supports that have already lived a life, deviance treated not as transgression for its own sake but as the necessary slippage between what a body is told to be and what it insists on becoming. Lapointe’s surfaces carry the labor of looking and reworking, and the show makes a case for imperfection, accretion, and resistance as their own kind of beauty.

Nery Gabriel Lemus has long mined the textures of family, migration, and intimacy in work that moves fluidly between painting and mixed media, and One Becomes The Other takes the relational as both subject and structure — the way a parent becomes a child’s mirror, a lover becomes a stranger, a self is continually reshaped by the people it loves and loses. The exhibition’s title names a transformation rather than a fixed state, and Lemus builds the show around that instability, letting figures and domestic motifs dissolve into one another so that identity reads as a process of exchange rather than a possession. It is tender work with a sharp edge, attentive to how care and dependency bend the boundaries of the self.

Angela Lane: Phase Shift

Angela Lane makes small, intensely worked paintings that behave like apertures onto atmospheric thresholds, and Phase Shift gathers a body of work tuned to the moment one state tips into the next — dusk into dark, vapor into form, the perceptual edge where a landscape stops being a place and becomes a sensation of light. The title borrows the language of physics for what the paintings enact optically: a transition managed in increments so fine the eye registers the change before the mind names it. Lane’s restraint is the point — these are pictures that reward slow looking, the kind of canvases that seem to keep shifting the longer you stand in front of them.

Let’s Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar

Betye Saar’s assemblage practice has spent six decades turning found objects into instruments of memory, protest, and protection, and Let’s Get It On draws out the strand of that practice meant to be worn — adornments, talismans, and ritual garments that move the artist’s familiar vocabulary of charged material off the wall and onto the body. The exhibition treats wearable art not as accessory but as armor and inheritance, each piece a small portable shrine in which beadwork, fabric, and salvaged ephemera accumulate into something between costume and spell — a reminder that Saar has always understood the object as a vessel for what a culture refuses to forget.

Marciano Art Foundation presents Magdalena Suarez Frimkess’s Ninety-six and Pissed — six decades of small-scale ceramic practice gathered as an autobiography written in glaze. David Kordansky Gallery opens Evan Holloway’s Roygbiv, extending the sculptor’s long-running spectrum vocabulary into a new chromatic register. Sprüth Magers marks ten years in Los Angeles with 10 Years LA!, an anniversary group exhibition retracing a decade of programming through the artists who have anchored it. Vielmetter Los Angeles presents Edgar Arceneaux’s We Are Gods — his twelfth solo with the gallery, a sustained inquiry into Black metaphysics rendered across drawing, painting, and installation. And Nazarian / Curcio debuts Vincent Pocsik’s A Thousand Years, sixteen new sculptural works in wood, cast metals, stained glass, and fiber that draw on Shaker discipline and surrealist disjunction to recast utility as a kind of devotion.

A quieter centennial counterpoint to the Academy Museum’s archive exhibition (see below) arrives at Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica — A Silent Life gathers vintage photographic prints of Marilyn Monroe across her career, foregrounding the moments between performance and publicity where Fetterman’s photographers caught the actress as a working subject rather than a constructed image. The gallery’s longstanding emphasis on humanist black-and-white photography frames the centennial through the printed image rather than the costumed object, and the contrast with the Academy Museum’s institutional presentation gives readers two distinct registers in which to encounter the same icon this week.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art’s Camden Annex presents a focused exhibition of Hilda D. Levy’s canvases negotiate biomorphic shape, hand-mixed pigment, and an Atlantic visual vocabulary that connects Caribbean modernism to mid-century American painting — the exhibition pairs naturally with the gallery’s concurrent Betty Lane presentation, suggesting an ongoing curatorial program of reframing under-recognized twentieth-century women painters.

Flora Temnouche’s A Room of One’s Own at Megan Mulrooney’s East location continues the gallery’s three-concurrent-solo-show programming with a body of work that takes Virginia Woolf’s title as both armature and rebuke — paintings and works on paper that map the domestic interior as a site of refusal, attention, and slow making. Temnouche’s surfaces register the labor of looking — accumulated marks, scraped pigment, reconsidered compositions — and the show functions as a quiet but pointed argument for the kind of sustained interior attention that Woolf’s essay first named as a precondition for any serious creative practice.

Sprüth Magers marks a decade in Los Angeles with 10 Years LA!, an anniversary group exhibition that retraces ten years of gallery programming through the artists who have anchored it — Andreas Gursky, Cindy Sherman, John Baldessari, Sterling Ruby, Anne Imhof, and dozens more across painting, photography, sculpture, and installation. Less a survey than a curated reunion, the exhibition functions as a portrait of a single gallery’s relationship to the city it landed in, threading transatlantic conceptualism into LA’s expanded studio practice and making visible — through the accumulation of individual works — what a decade of consistent programming actually looks like as a constellation.

Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon

Opening on what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s centennial year, Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum gathers screen-worn costumes, personal items, photographs, and rare archival material into the most comprehensive institutional reckoning with Monroe’s career and afterlife yet mounted in Los Angeles. Running nine months through next February, the exhibition treats the actress not as a single mythic image but as a material archive — wardrobe, correspondence, makeup, scripts — that registers the labor underneath the icon, and the cost of that labor as it accumulated across a fifteen-year career compressed into mass cultural memory.

Magdalena Suarez Frimkess: Ninety-six and Pissed

Six decades of daily ceramic practice arrive at the Marciano Art Foundation in a long-run institutional survey — Ninety-six and Pissed gathers small-scale vessels, plates, and figurines that Magdalena Suarez Frimkess has hand-glazed since the 1960s, a body of work built without fanfare and refused as a single autobiographical accumulation rather than a conventional career retrospective. Born in 1929 in Venezuela and working in Los Angeles since the 1970s, Frimkess treats the kiln as a journal — daily pieces marked by Pop iconography, comic-book line, ancient pottery references, and a strain of unsentimental humor that the title makes explicit.

Evan Holloway: Roygbiv

Evan Holloway’s Roygbiv extends a decades-long sculptural vocabulary into a new chromatic register — branching armatures rendered in tree-like geometries and figural fragments cast in plaster, ash, bronze, and pigment, each work carrying the artist’s signature negotiation between hand and system. Running alongside Hilary Pecis’s Love Letters in the gallery’s second space (now in its closing weeks), Roygbiv consolidates Holloway’s interest in color-as-structure rather than surface — the rainbow not as decoration but as armature, an ordering principle around which sculpture organizes itself.

Vincent Pocsik: A Thousand Years

Vincent Pocsik’s second solo with Nazarian / Curcio debuts sixteen new sculptural works — wood, cast metals, stained glass, and fiber composed into hybrid forms that oscillate between Shaker discipline and surrealist disjunction, including the artist’s first functional pieces (a rocking chair, a standard chair, and umbrella-form stained-glass chandeliers suspended overhead). Drawing the exhibition title from a Shaker saying — do all your work as though you had a thousand years to live, and as you would if you knew you must die tomorrow — Pocsik recasts utility as a kind of devotion, with elongated anthropomorphic structures and joinery-honest furniture pushing the discipline of craft into a more psychologically charged, irrational terrain.

Edgar Arceneaux: We Are Gods

Edgar Arceneaux’s twelfth solo exhibition with Vielmetter Los Angeles arrives as a sustained inquiry rather than a single body of work — We Are Gods threads drawing, painting, installation, and text across the gallery’s spaces in pursuit of Black metaphysics as both subject and method. Building on Arceneaux’s longstanding interest in the intersections of cosmology, civil rights history, and material entropy, the exhibition locates the divine not in transcendence but in the labor of ordinary attention — with works that range from rust-stained canvases to recovered furniture rendered as ritual objects.

Maki Meets Mullican

Wolfpack HQ’s archive-exhibition series continues in Gardena with Maki Meets Mullican, a pairing that places photographic and printed material from the conceptualist Matt Mullican alongside work by the painter and printmaker Maki Na Kamura — two artists whose practices share a commitment to inventoried, sign-based vocabularies but diverge in their relationships to material and surface. Why this, why now? The photography world has excellent publications — L’Oeil de la Photographie delivers essential daily coverage, Aperture and Foam publish deeply considered quarterly issues, and the British Journal of Photography has been a vital voice since 1854.
