On Saturday in the Arts District, Vielmetter Los Angeles opens April Bey’s All the Reasons We Never Tell Someone We Love Them…They’re Worthless. Bey spent a year dating as an alien narrator reporting home, and one of the results is a tapestry in mink, jacquard, and metallic brocade. On Sunday, Jack Rutberg Fine Arts opens Jerome Witkin – Epic, paintings and drawings by a painter the gallery ranks among the country’s most highly regarded figurative artists. And at the Schindler House, the MAK Center sets Red Vienna’s century of public housing beside Los Angeles’s market-driven one in Social Housing: Vienna—Los Angeles. Also on view: a group show of Coachella Valley artists in Riverside, carved wooden oranges in Westlake, Millie Wilson’s first retrospective at Cal State LA, and Amy Talluto’s first LA solo show, with paintings and ceramics, in Atwater Village.

Kiki Smith: Untethered Journey

Kiki Smith has not had a solo show in Los Angeles in thirty years. This one, presented by Jeffrey Deitch and Pace at Deitch’s gallery at 925 N Orange Drive, is the first full exhibition the two galleries have mounted together. It centers on Smith’s sculptures of the body. Early bronzes like Virgin Mary (1994) and Blood Pool (1992) sit beside pieces in papier mâché, beeswax, polyester resin, and fiberglass. Smith often puts the figure where you don’t expect it; in Moon on Crutches (2002), a single body hangs in a tangle of lines. Drawing, glass, printmaking, and textile round out a practice that borrows from eighteenth-century anatomical drawings, relics, folklore, and medieval altarpieces, and keeps returning to mortality and regeneration. The opening reception is Friday, October 30, from 6 to 8pm.

Barry McGee: Another Round

The same night Kiki Smith opens on Orange Drive, Deitch’s Santa Monica Boulevard space opens Barry McGee’s Another Round. The building was once RCA Victor’s West Coast recording studio. Deitch handed McGee the keys and invited him to work there for several weeks with artist friends. The show follows McGee’s takeover of a former 99-cent store on Wilshire Boulevard last February, and Deitch says it will take in the energy of LA’s underground culture today. It is Deitch’s first solo show with McGee in more than twenty years. McGee started out on the streets of San Francisco as a teenager, and his work joins tagging, careful drawing, and assemblage sculpture. The opening reception is Friday, October 30, from 6 to 8pm at 7000 Santa Monica Boulevard.

April Bey: All the Reasons We Never Tell Someone We Love Them…They’re Worthless

For her second solo show at Vielmetter, the Bahamian-American artist spent a year trying to date in the United States. She did it as the alien narrator of her ongoing Atlantica project, gathering stories of desire, avoidance, and companionship to report back to her home planet. It starts out funny and turns into a reckoning with how people give, withhold, and lose love. One tapestry, three panels and fifteen feet across, is made of mink, jacquard, and metallic brocade and hung with oversized clothespins, beads, and bamboo earrings. The show also includes Bey’s first self-portraits. The opening reception is Saturday, October 31, from 4 to 6pm, and Bey asks guests to come in their most festive clothes.

Jack Rutberg Fine Arts calls this a rare exhibition for Jerome Witkin, who was born in Brooklyn in 1939 and whom the gallery counts among the country’s most highly regarded figurative painters. It is his first show in Los Angeles in twelve years, since a joint exhibition with his twin brother, the photographer Joel-Peter Witkin. The paintings and drawings span several decades, and some come from long-held private collections. Witkin paints his figures from life. Large oils like Her Dream (1987), more than six feet tall, are made for slow looking. The opening reception is Sunday, November 1, from 3 to 6pm.

MAK Center at the Schindler House | West Hollywood
Social Housing: Vienna—Los Angeles

R.M. Schindler built his Kings Road house in 1922 as an experiment in cooperative living. Around the same time, Red Vienna began the public housing program that would reshape that city over the next century. The MAK Center uses the overlap to set the two cities side by side. Curated by Michael Obrist, Sabine Pollak, and Beth Stryker, the show pairs case studies with photographs by Armin Linke, Hertha Hurnaus, and others, and with short videos. It follows Vienna’s steady public investment in housing and Los Angeles’s mostly market-driven path. Rather than hold up Vienna as a model to copy, it asks what each history can tell us about affordable, shared city life now.

The same day in Westlake, Official Welcome opens iris yirei hu’s Unconscious Relics, paintings, ceramics, and reliquary boxes that come out of three years of social dreaming and trace the thin line between sleep and death. And on Western Avenue, OCHI shows Adam Beris’s Word is the Fish are Biting like Crazy, large collaged canvases that copy the endless scroll beside small paintings that pull single images out of it — a pat of melting butter, a cowboy against the sunset. Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Passions

Los Angeles-born Reggie Burrows Hodges has long admired historic European painting, and for this new series he works from paintings in the Getty’s collection by the father-and-daughter painters Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi. He keeps their 17th-century forms and stories in view while bringing out the violence, drama, and theatricality inside their biblical and mythological scenes. The show is in the Museum East Pavilion, Upper Level, is presented in English and Spanish, and is free with a timed-entry reservation. A companion show, Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Dreams, runs over the same dates at Art + Practice.

Julie Tolentino: And Never Ends

Julie Tolentino’s installation of cultured crystals, a sound composition, and a vectorized drawing made through performance is meant to keep growing and changing for the whole run, so a second visit will not match the first. The aim is to move the visual to the side and put listening and direct encounter first. Tolentino, a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow and 2025–26 ICA LA artist in residence, works across durational performance, sound, scent, objects, and text. Open Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 5pm.

Dorr Bothwell: In Her Mind’s Eye

Nearly 20 years in the making, this is the first full survey of Dorr Bothwell (1902–2000), the California Surrealist artist, designer, and educator, with more than 100 works across six decades. It follows her from the West Coast Surrealist circle, where she worked beside Lorser Feitelson and Helen Lundeberg in the WPA years, into Symbolist-tinged figuration, landscape abstraction, and color screen printing — and shows her design side in full for the first time, from ceramic editions for Catalina Pottery to sketches for Notan: The Dark-Light Principle of Design, the primer she wrote with Marlys Mayfield, and textiles and drawings made in Samoa, West Africa, and Southeast Asia. Co-presented with the Loeb Art Center at Vassar College, where it travels next summer. The opening reception is Saturday, October 24, from 5:30 to 7:30pm.

For three years iris yirei hu has practiced social dreaming, a group method where people share their night dreams to surface what a community is anxious about, and her first solo show with Official Welcome brings that work into new paintings, ceramics, and reliquary boxes about the closeness of dreaming and death. Her symbols run from teeth and bones to the Datura flower, tied to her relationship with Tongva elder Julia Bogany, to the liver, heart, and kidneys of Chinese medicine, set in near-symmetrical compositions. The pieces read as offerings for elders and ancestors, and the gallery plays along: a small, guarded door, and a west-facing room where the setting sun crosses the floor each day. The opening reception is Saturday, October 24, from 4 to 6pm.

Adam Beris: Word is the Fish are Biting like Crazy

When the artist Rudolf Stingel brushed off a question about whether his work belonged to an American art tradition, the question stayed with Adam Beris, and his third solo show at OCHI is a year spent working out what that tradition looks like now. On the large canvases he collages Las Vegas call-girl ads, coloring-book pages, tire commercials, Christian self-help guides, and a portrait of JFK into something like a social feed that never stops. The small canvases do the opposite — they lift one image out of the stream, a pat of melting butter or a Marlboro cowboy against the setting sun, and hold it still, each one finished in a sitting or two.

On Sunday, The Brick on Western Avenue opens Todd Gray: Church and State, two new mural-scale photographic assemblages that set European palaces and churches against West African sites of the slave trade, shown with the biographical material behind Gray’s two careers as a commercial photographer and as an artist. The same afternoon, LACMA opens The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990, the first large-scale exhibition on the space brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis founded in South L.A. after the Watts Rebellion, where David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, and Carrie Mae Weems got early starts. The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990

Brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis founded the Brockman Gallery in South L.A. in the wake of the Watts Rebellion, and for more than two decades it was a vital space for young artists of color, nurturing the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others. LACMA’s survey, the first large-scale exhibition on the gallery’s impact, brings together more than 60 works across media, all with ties to the Davises’ community-minded project, with rich archival material. It traces how the brothers made room for artistic experiment, intellectual exchange, and a multicultural community. On view in BCAM, Level 1.

LAUNCH LA | Mid-Wilshire
Cindy Craig: Weeping Women / Leigh Salgado: Small Eruptions

LAUNCH pairs two solo shows by Los Angeles artists who look at femininity and the roles women are pressed to play, in ornate, symbolic, funny, and sometimes dark work. Cindy Craig’s Weeping Women uses paintings and mixed media, surreal imagery and advertising-style ornament to ask what it means to be a woman in a society that never stops telling her how she should look. Leigh Salgado’s Small Eruptions turns to her signature hand-cut and painted paper: vibrant wall boxes burst with frilly hand-painted paper beside small, tightly contained cut-paper paintings, each one holding pressure just before release. The opening is Saturday, October 17, from 6 to 9pm; a closing reception and artist-led walkthrough follow on November 14.

Raina Lee: Stolen

Every piece in Stolen is a copy, and every original was stolen. Raina Lee went to the Louvre in October 2025 to see the French crown jewels and found the gallery shut days after the theft, so she made her own — a sapphire crown and an emerald necklace with settings cast in pewter and stones cast in glass. From there she worked back through the record of missing art, from the thirteen works taken from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990, among them Vermeer’s The Concert and Manet’s Chez Tortoni, to the paintings lifted from the Kunsthal Rotterdam in 2012. The pictures are glazed and fired stoneware slabs, made to read as both paintings and postcards. The opening reception is Saturday, October 17.

Todd Gray: Church and State

Over the past decade, Los Angeles-born Todd Gray (b. 1954) has built ever larger photographic assemblages from his own archive, setting palaces, museums, and churches of European wealth against sites tied to the slave trade on Africa’s west coast, and threading in photographs of African American cultural icons. Church and State shows three works, two of them new and mural-scale, with a substantial collection of biographical images and ephemera tracing Gray’s life as a young Black man in post-war Los Angeles and the two bodies of work, commercial photography and art, that he kept apart for years. Organized by The Brick’s director Hamza Walker with Hannah Burstein and Storm Bookhard, it comes with a forthcoming book-length interview between Gray and Walker. The opening reception is Sunday, October 18, from 2 to 5pm.

The same day in Westwood, the Hammer Museum opens Mavis Pusey: Mobile Images, the first major museum survey of the Jamaican-born abstractionist, whose “Broken Construction” series uses destruction and renewal as pictures of social change. Pusey joins Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines, already on view at the Hammer with some 150 works by the Lebanese-born artist who spent her last decades in Venice and made sensual, funny art about bodies, language, and aging. At Simchowitz’s Hill House, Harare-based Julio Rizhi shows twenty-two works made between 2020 and 2024, from small wall pieces to large sculptural forms. He borrows the structures of pottery and weaving, builds in mesh and wire, then layers, heats, colors, and works plastic by hand until a material tied to consumption and waste turns pliable and bright. The title comes from family history: his mother is from Malawi, his late father was Nyungwe from Mozambique, and the story of their migration to Zimbabwe, where Rizhi was born in 1991, became his first archive. The show opens Sunday; visits are by appointment.

Mavis Pusey: Mobile Images

Mavis Pusey (1928–2019) made geometric abstractions on canvas and paper that drew on fashion, printmaking, and the cities she lived in, and Mobile Images is the first major museum survey of her work, with more than 60 pieces from a fifty-year career. Her “Broken Construction” series, made from the 1960s into the 1990s, treats destruction and renewal as images of social change. Photographs, personal notes, and archival material hang alongside the paintings. Co-organized by the ICA Philadelphia and the Studio Museum in Harlem, the survey opens Sunday, October 11.

Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines

Born in Lebanon, married into France, and settled by choice in Venice, California, where she spent her last decades, Huguette Caland (1931–2019) reached a much wider audience after the Hammer included her in Made in L.A. 2016. A Life in a Few Lines gathers about 150 drawings, paintings, sculptures, and textiles with archival material and ephemera, from dresses worked in thread in the early 1970s to self-portraits in oil. The work is sensual and funny about bodies, language, gender, and aging. Organized with the Museo Reina Sofía and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, it runs through February 28 alongside the Pusey survey.

Carmen Lomas Garza: Picturing the Familiar

The first major Carmen Lomas Garza retrospective in more than two decades covers over fifty years of paintings of family celebrations, neighborhood traditions, healing practices, and everyday Mexican American life, from the gouache Tamalada (1987) to Heaven and Hell II (1991). Organized by the ASU Art Museum, the show hangs her work with paintings, prints, photographs, and archival material by 17 artists from her circle in the Chicano Movement, among them Amalia Mesa-Bains, Rupert García, Ester Hernandez, Gronk, and Santa Barraza. It also reunites four paintings from Cheech Marin’s 2001 exhibition Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge. On view in the second-floor galleries through February 14.

Kwame Brathwaite: You and I

Kwame Brathwaite (1938–2023) spent his career making “Black Is Beautiful” visible, through his photographs and the two organizations he helped found, the African Jazz-Arts Society and Studio and Grandassa Models. You and I brings out newly released and never-before-seen work from 1961 to 1975, selected by actor and activist Jesse Williams and Kwame S. Brathwaite, director of the Kwame Brathwaite Archive. The title borrows a phrase W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, and Stevie Wonder all used to reach their audiences, and Brathwaite’s 1975 portrait of Wonder on stage is in the show. The reception is Friday, October 2, from 6:30 to 9pm, with a 7pm conversation moderated by Marc Bamuthi Joseph.

Ynez Johnston: In Search of the Oracle

Ynez Johnston (1920–2019) worked for seven decades across painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, building a private symbolic language out of Maya glyphs, Tibetan thangkas, Byzantine mosaics, Matisse, and Klee. Her pictures keep returning to fanciful creatures on invented continents, cloud cities bristling with pyramids and palaces, and bulbous ships crossing whirlpools. She had her first museum solo show at 22 and moved through postwar Los Angeles alongside June Wayne, Lee Mullican, and Luchita Hurtado without ever joining a movement. The show opens Saturday and runs into January.

Jon Ching opens a new solo exhibition at KP Projects on La Brea this Saturday, October 3, with a reception from 6 to 9pm. The Los Angeles painter is known for meticulous, surreal paintings in which plants and animals fuse into single organisms. The gallery is also offering private digital previews ahead of the opening.

Charles Arnoldi: String Theory

At 80, Charles Arnoldi has been exhibiting for more than 55 years, and String Theory returns to a series of paintings he made between 2016 and 2019. He drew the lines freehand, close to automatic drawing, letting them stack until the edges of the canvas held them in, then filled the shapes that formed at the crossings with color. The gallery compares the floating forms to Calder. Arnoldi walks through the show on Friday, October 2, at 11am, and the opening reception is Saturday from 6 to 8pm.

Downtown at MOCA Grand Avenue, Venezuelan artist Alexander Apóstol’s Regime: Dramatis Personae hangs black-and-white portraits of archetypal political roles (the dictator, the masked police officer, the ideological tourist, the one from Hollywood), modeled by LGBTQ+ activists in Caracas and labeled not with names but with the social functions they perform. And at LACMA, Home of the Future, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias opens Saturday in the Resnick Pavilion, tracing six decades of American domestic futures through architectural models, drawings, photographs, films, and objects (self-cleaning kitchens, plastic houses assembled in a day, push-button appliances), and asking who those futures were packaged for, and who was left out.

Seventeen new photographs of paper constructions fill Matthew Marks’s Orange Grove space. Thomas Demand rebuilds the world in paper and cardboard, then photographs the reconstruction until the model becomes the only evidence left. The Model Series has always treated the photograph as a record of something that existed only to be pictured; here the reconstructions sit close enough that the paper’s edges and joints remain part of what you see. What holds is the image, not the room that made it.

At Vielmetter’s Santa Fe Avenue space, Chapter 3: Interiors and Exteriors works painting, sculpture, and mixed media across the problem of the room: what an interior holds, what an exterior withholds, and how the threshold between them becomes a subject rather than a passage. The title treats interiors and exteriors as equal terms, not as background for figures. On view through the end of October in the Arts District.

Gê Viana’s first U.S. institutional presentation is a Hammer Project spanning installation, video, sculpture, and mixed media. The Brazilian artist’s research-driven practice treats image and object as parts of one channel rather than separate media. The project format gives the work room to operate as a temporary occupation of the museum rather than a fixed survey, and the run extends through early February.

Regime: Dramatis Personae turns Alexander Apóstol’s long inquiry into art and political power in Latin America into a cast list. Shot in Caracas with LGBTQ+ activists modeling archetypal figures of populist and authoritarian government, the black-and-white portraits carry no personal names, only the social functions the sitters perform. In the Los Angeles selection, those roles read as a working script still in production.

Home of the Future, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias

Between 1925 and 1985 Americans were sold an array of domestic utopias: self-cleaning kitchens, plastic houses assembled in a day, push-button appliances, desktop computers. Home of the Future at LACMA’s Resnick Pavilion gathers the architectural models, drawings, photographs, films, and household objects through which those futures were imagined, packaged, and sold. The exhibition treats the American home of tomorrow as both a design history and a marketing campaign, asking what abundance looked like, who was excluded from it, and who imagined radical alternatives. It opens Saturday and runs through mid-March.

Hammer Projects: Vibeke Mascini

Vibeke Mascini builds work around energy that has already lived somewhere else — a beached whale carcass, electric eels, a melting glacier — and for her first Hammer Project she runs electrical cable through electroformed ceiba trees and orchids until root system and wiring become difficult to tell apart. The plants, metallised and rigid, are made to do a job they were never built for, and the installation holds them at exactly the point where a botanical form turns into infrastructure. Organized by Pablo José Ramírez, it is the kind of piece that leaves the room’s ordinary wiring looking suddenly like something that grew there.

Every Minute Is History: Five Views of Los Angeles

Five photographers — Laura Aguilar, Reynaldo Rivera, George Rodriguez, Patssi Valdez and Ricardo Valverde — worked the same city across the second half of the twentieth century and came back with five incompatible versions of it, which is the exhibition’s argument rather than its problem. Aguilar’s portraits insist on bodies the frame was not built for; Rivera’s night pictures hold a Los Angeles that only existed after dark; Rodriguez shot the marches and the movie stars with the same steadiness. What accumulates across the five is less a survey of Chicano/a Los Angeles than a demonstration of how much a community’s record depends on who was standing there with a camera, and on what they decided was worth the exposure.

Five photographic series made between 1979 and 2008 are brought into dialogue here for the first time, and the effect is of a sensibility caught working in a register it never had to explain to anyone. Lynch’s photographs share the films’ appetite for industrial surface — smokestacks, rot, corridors that end badly — but without narrative to carry them they sit closer to still life, patient and unpeopled, the atmosphere doing all the labor. This is the first Los Angeles presentation of his visual art since his death last year, which gives the whole room the quality of an archive opening rather than an exhibition mounting.

David Smith welded by day and sprayed by night, laying found objects and cut-out forms onto paper and working enamel around them until the object lifted away and left its own absence behind — negative space as structure, colour arriving as weather rather than as drawing. An exhibition given over entirely to these seldom-seen works reframes one of American sculpture’s central figures as someone who spent his dark hours testing what a picture could do without a single mark standing for a thing. The paint records only what it could not reach, which turns out to be the most precise account of the object available.

Paul Pfeiffer has spent three decades taking the footage that mass audiences have already consumed and removing from it the thing they came for — the athlete, the ball, the decisive moment — so that what remains is the roar, the lighting rig, the tens of thousands of faces turned the same direction. Olympia extends that operation into the vocabulary of the sporting spectacle at its most ceremonial, where bodies are asked to stand for nations and the crowd’s attention becomes a material with weight and volume of its own. Stripped of its subject, the spectacle does not collapse; it simply reveals that it was never really about the figure at the center.

Opening today in Beverly Hills, Gagosian gives Jia Aili his first solo in the city and his first with the gallery since 2019, introducing what the painter calls parallel painting — two pictorial systems held in one frame without either being allowed to win. Also opening today, Shoshana Wayne Gallery presents Heide Fasnacht’s first solo with the gallery, in which damaged archival photographs are rebuilt in printer ink and acrylic laid down like sediment, until the injury to the original becomes the subject rather than the obstacle. And on Saturday in Hollywood, Nazarian / Curcio hangs fifteen new Bridget Mullen paintings — a fourth solo in which bodies and motifs mutate from canvas to canvas, refusing to settle into the shapes the eye keeps proposing for them.

Menchelli’s third solo with the gallery gathers roughly two dozen unique chromogenic works made without a camera — sheets of photographic paper folded by hand in total darkness, exposed to light, then set into custom shadowboxes color-matched to whatever the paper gave back. The gallery has darkened the room to show them, which turns the encounter into something closer to looking at a light source than at a photograph: the fold reads as an edge, the edge as a horizon, the whole surface as a landscape that was never in front of a lens. Works from the artist’s Queer Horizons series recently entered the Getty’s collection, and the argument here is the one those made — that a photograph can be a record of light meeting a surface and nothing else, and still hold a view.

Greg Miller: What’s Goin’ On

Greg Miller was the first artist William Turner showed when the gallery opened in 1991, and thirty-five years on he is still building pictures the same way — found paper and printed matter laid into the surface, photorealist passages worked over the top, gestural marks cutting across both. The source material is postwar American vernacular at its loudest: advertising, comic panels, roadside signage, Hollywood publicity, the language a century of commerce used to talk to itself. What accumulates is less collage than compression — layers pressed until the fragments stop competing and start reading as a single weathered surface, the way a wall in this city looks after enough decades of being posted over.

Seeing Through: Jia Aili’s Parallel Paintings

Jia Aili’s first solo exhibition in Beverly Hills — and his first with Gagosian since 2019 — arrives under a title that doubles as an instruction. The works the artist calls parallel paintings hold two pictorial systems in the same frame at once, a figurative order and an abstract one running alongside each other with neither permitted to resolve, so the eye is left crossing between them rather than resting in one. Jia has spent two decades painting post-industrial landscape and the isolated figure inside it; here the landscape is the picture’s own construction, and what you are asked to see through is the surface itself.

Heide Fasnacht: Nature Once Removed

Fasnacht’s first solo with the gallery begins with archival photographs that have already been hurt — creased, faded, torn, chemically degraded by whatever storage they survived — and rebuilds them in printer ink and acrylic, layer over layer, until the damage becomes the subject rather than the thing to be repaired. The nature in the title arrives at several removes: once through the camera that recorded it, again through the decay of the print that held it, a third time through the painter’s hand. What is left is landscape as sediment — a picture of a picture of a place, each stratum admitting how much was lost on the way down.

Bridget Mullen: Who Needs Muscles If Nothing Is Heavy?

Fifteen new paintings from the New York–based Mullen, her fourth solo with the gallery, in which a small vocabulary of recurring motifs — limbs, faces, doubled and tripled forms — is put through enough variation that the eye stops trying to identify and starts trying to keep up. Mullen paints the moment perception fails to settle: a shape that is a hand until it is a mouth, a figure that has traded a body part with the figure beside it, mutation treated not as horror but as the ordinary condition of looking at something long enough. The title is a joke with a real question inside it — what holds a body together when nothing in the picture has any weight.

Instante/revelación: Moments in Mexican Photography

Thirteen photographers — Lola Álvarez Bravo, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Héctor García, Graciela Iturbide, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Flor Garduño, Mariana Yampolsky and others — arrive at the Getty from the Greenberg/Steinhauser gift, and the exhibition treats them not as a national school but as a long argument about what a photograph can hold. Street and studio, documentary assignment and staged apparition, the work moves between the observed instant and the thing the instant reveals — the title’s two halves, kept in tension rather than resolved. Presented bilingually and paired with the publications that carried these images into the world, it is the most substantial account of Mexican photography Los Angeles has been given in years, and it opens the fall by insisting the archive is where the season’s real news lives.

Gronk: X Reason

Gronk has been making pictures in Los Angeles since Asco turned the street into a stage in the early seventies, and X Reason finds him still working the gestural, theatrical vocabulary he helped invent — heavy brushwork, recurring silhouetted figures, color pushed until it becomes weather. The work has never sat comfortably inside a single frame; it carries the scale and pacing of the murals, sets, and performances the artist has moved through for fifty years. One of three shows opening at Krull this Saturday, and the one that anchors the day.

Guest-curated by Inés Marseillan with the Archive of Modern Conflict, this is four decades of Argentine political life told entirely through press photographs pulled from the archives of La Razón and Clarín — Perón’s return, the coups, the disappearances, the slow arrival of democracy. These are working pictures, made fast for tomorrow’s front page and never intended to survive their news cycle, and the Wende’s achievement is to let that speed remain visible while the images accumulate into something a single frame could never carry. Between Washington and Moscow, a country swung; the newspaper photographers were the ones standing there with a camera when it did.

Susan Silton: Diving Into The Wreck

Four decades of Susan Silton’s work come together at Barnsdall in her first major survey — more than 150 pieces spanning participatory and multi-media installation, photography, video, audio, early graphic design, and the textual interventions that have run through all of it. Silton has always worked at the seam where language, image, and the public sphere rub against each other, and the survey’s scale lets the through-line surface: a practice built from found and borrowed forms, turned back on the institutions that produced them. The show debuts Civilized Voices, a new billboard project that puts the work outside the gallery walls entirely — the survey’s argument tested on the street it came from.

Patrick Wilson: Things I Like

Patrick Wilson builds his hard-edge abstractions the slow way — dozens of ultra-thin acrylic layers laid one over another until the surface stops reading as paint and starts reading as light held at a distance. The new works, Free Lemons, Szechuan Food, Analog Music among them, take their titles from exactly what the show’s name promises, a painter’s list of pleasures translated into bands and blocks of color that hover rather than sit. In a week given over to archives and press files, Wilson’s Gallery I is the room where nothing came before the paint.

Borrowing its title from Sun Ra’s 1973 album and the cosmic film that followed, SPACE IS THE PLACE draws the Hammer’s contemporary collection into a meditation on belonging, placemaking, and the simple radical act of taking up room. The selection threads afrofuturist imagination through works that treat space — outer, inner, civic, domestic — as something to be claimed rather than granted, a place a person or a people decides to occupy. It is a collection show with an argument: that where you are allowed to exist has always been the first question art about liberation has to answer.

Outsiders, Outcasts, Rebels + Weirdos: Punk Culture 1976–86

Fifty years on, punk gets the archival treatment it once defined itself against, and the Skirball leans into the irony with more than five hundred objects — handmade flyers, cut-and-paste zines, hand-lettered buttons and posters, and garments from Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren — drawn from the New York, London, Los Angeles, and Washington scenes. Outsiders, Outcasts, Rebels + Weirdos insists that punk’s real medium was the photocopier and the safety pin, a do-it-yourself visual culture assembled faster than any institution could sanction it. Dense, graphic, and cheerfully disreputable, it is a museum room that still sounds like a basement show.

Machine Dreams: Rainforest

DATALAND — Refik Anadol’s new museum inside Frank Gehry’s Grand LA, billed as the first devoted to the art of artificial intelligence — opens with Machine Dreams: Rainforest, a forest conjured entirely by a machine. Anadol’s Large Nature Model generates its greenery in real time across a wall of moving image, tuned by responsive sound, scent, and biometric feedback so that no two visitors watch quite the same forest. Set against a week of hand-thrown clay, hand-pulled prints, and hand-cut punk ephemera, it is the season’s sharpest provocation — an image with no hand behind it, dreaming nature back at the city that engineered it.

Mineo Mizuno: Homage to Nature

Mineo Mizuno sets ceramic and carved-wood works directly into the Huntington’s gardens, where Homage to Nature treats the vessel and the log not as objects to be pedestaled but as things returned to the ground that made them. Mizuno has spent a career moving between refined porcelain and rough-hewn timber, and here the two vocabularies meet outdoors — glazed forms and split wood set among living plantings, weathering with the season rather than sealed against it. It is a quiet argument that the most honest homage to nature is one you leave partly in nature’s hands.

Samella! Black as Lacquer and Iron

The museum that carries Samella Lewis’s name gives her a survey worthy of it: painter, printmaker, and the art historian who founded the International Review of African American Art, Lewis spent six decades making and defending images of Black life across a century that too often refused them wall space. Black as Lacquer and Iron moves through her prints and paintings with an eye to their material weight — the bitten line of an etching, the density of a worked surface — and to the scholar’s discipline that ran alongside the studio. It is at once a homecoming and an overdue reckoning with an artist who built institutions as deliberately as she built pictures.

Eileen Cowin: Between Panic and Paradise

LACMA gives Eileen Cowin a fifty-year survey, and the timing feels overdue for an artist who has spent her whole career treating the photograph as a set rather than a snapshot. Cowin stages photographic and video narratives that borrow equally from film and the family album — figures posed mid-gesture in domestic interiors, caught in scenes that hover just short of resolving into a single story. Between Panic and Paradise follows that long project across mediums, from her early black-and-white tableaux to recent video, insisting throughout that the most ordinary picture of a family is something built, lit, and directed rather than found. It is the season’s clearest argument that photography’s truth has always been a matter of staging.

Brad Eberhard: Building an Audience

Brad Eberhard’s Building an Audience opens Saturday with oil on canvas mounted over panel and set into frames the artist builds himself, so that the painting and the object holding it arrive as one continuous decision. The frames refuse their usual role as neutral border — they become part of the picture’s argument, closing the gap between the image and the thing on the wall. Eberhard’s surfaces reward slow looking, and the title’s wry nod to the labor of earning attention runs underneath the whole show: these are paintings frankly aware that they are asking to be watched.

John Collins: Graven Images to the Major Deities

Track 16 hands its downtown walls to John Collins for Graven Images to the Major Deities, a show that summons gods and idols with a deadpan devotional charge — painted and mixed-media images that take the old prohibition against graven likenesses and cheerfully ignore it. Collins builds a pantheon out of paint, letting reverence and irony share the same surface, so that each figure reads at once as sincere offering and knowing joke. The result is a downtown opening that treats mythology as living, disreputable, and very much still in circulation.

bG Gallery marks the turn of the season with Autumn Enchantment, a group show of painting and mixed media tuned to shorter light and the particular spell of the year’s decline. Rather than a single argument, the exhibition offers a gathering of sensibilities — works that lean into warmth, atmosphere, and the slow chromatic shift that autumn brings even to a city that barely admits to seasons. It is bG at its most inviting: a room assembled to feel like the weather turning.

Davina Semo: Tender Shield

The Benton Museum gives Davina Semo a year-long room for Tender Shield, cast sculpture that makes protection feel weighty, physical, and strangely intimate. Semo works in bronze and cast metal with a sculptor’s respect for mass, but the title pulls the work toward something softer — armor rendered as care, defense that reads as tenderness rather than threat. Installed for the long run through next June, it is a show worth the drive to Claremont: an argument that the things we make to guard ourselves can carry as much feeling as the things they guard.

Gallery Luisotti gathers six contemporary artists — Marcel Alcalá, Maxfield Hegedus, Kittipong, Arturo Soto, Abdi Taslimi, and Evan Whale — for 1911 Sunset Boulevard, presented alongside Ed Ruscha’s landmark Every Building on the Sunset Strip. The title is the address of the former Taix French Restaurant, whose theatrical dining rooms, banquet halls, and murals hosted sixty years of private dinners and long nights on Echo Park’s stretch of Sunset before its demolition; the six artists’ photographs, altered photographic works, and one painting follow the restaurant through its final months, its closing night, and the flattened landscape left behind. It’s a show about what a building leaves as evidence once it’s gone — theater, memory, and a street address standing in for everything that happened inside it.

The Other Side

Nazarian / Curcio gathers four distinct sensibilities — Brian Bress, Widline Cadet, Kristin Calabrese and John Divola — under The Other Side, a group show that presses on whatever lies just past the surface of a picture. Between Bress’s costumed video figures, Cadet’s photographs of diasporic memory and intimacy, Calabrese’s painted image-making and Divola’s decades of staged and interrupted landscapes, the show reads less as a survey than as four ways of reaching behind the frame. What connects them is a shared suspicion that the image is a threshold rather than a wall — that there is always another side to what a photograph or a painting is willing to show.

And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos

Make Room borrows its title from John Berger’s slim 1984 meditation on love, absence, and time — And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos — for a group show that takes the photograph’s very brevity as its premise. Bringing together Dane Nakama, Justin Cole and others, the exhibition treats the image the way Berger did: as something fleeting held against everything that outlasts it, a face remembered longer than the moment it was made. The result is a show about impermanence that keeps circling back to what refuses to fade — the picture as a small, stubborn stay against forgetting.

Roberto Diago: Presence

Vielmetter gives the Afro-Cuban artist Roberto Diago the room for Presence, painting and mixed-media work rooted in the material history of the African diaspora in Cuba — humble stuff marshaled into surfaces that carry the weight of what they are made from. Diago works as much with matter as with image, letting worn and salvaged materials stand in for a history that official accounts have tried to keep out of frame. The title names the argument: a body of work that insists on presence where erasure was intended, testimony pressed into the surface itself.

Masakatsu Sashie

KP Projects hands its walls to Masakatsu Sashie, the Japanese painter known for vast floating orb-cities — spheres packed with vending machines, signage, and the glittering detritus of consumer culture, hovering over depopulated landscapes like arks assembled from everything a society has thrown away. Presented by the gallery as Ambivalence, the paintings hold their tone exactly there, between wonder and dread: these hovering worlds are dazzling and derelict at once, monuments to abundance built entirely from its wreckage. Sashie makes the end of the world look like a shopping arcade that has finally achieved orbit.

James Fuentes gives the self-taught New Zealand artist Susan Te Kahurangi King her first solo exhibition on the West Coast — The Page Before Me, a survey that follows her drawing from the late 1950s to the present in pen, graphite, colored pencil, crayon and ink. King, who largely stopped speaking as a young child and has drawn continuously ever since, treats the sheet as a place where figures borrowed from comics and cartoons buckle, stretch, and dissolve into pure pattern — the recognizable slipping into abstraction and back within a single passage. Laid end to end, the work reads less as a sequence of pictures than as one unbroken act of attention, a lifetime measured in marks.

Ryan Eakins: The Ancients

At Winslow Garage, the artist-run project space tucked into Silver Lake, Ryan Eakins devotes The Ancients to a single, staggering subject — the Great Basin bristlecone pine, Pinus longaeva, the oldest non-clonal living organism on earth, some individuals nearing five thousand years old. Working entirely in pen and ink, Eakins renders these wind-carved, half-petrified trees as portraits, every twist of grain and stripped white limb built from thousands of patient hatched lines. The conceit is quietly vertiginous: a hand that took weeks describing a life that has outlasted whole civilizations — deep time set down one stroke at a time.

For one evening on Santa Fe Avenue, Baert Gallery hands its space to Jordan Rountree for the ninth installment of his ongoing CHTHONIC ARCHIVE — a live performance series that descends, each time, into some buried civic anxiety and stages it in real time. Waiting for GTA takes on the dread of automation directly: the low, spreading fear that the work of the hand is being quietly written out of the world, that we are all, in some sense, waiting to be made redundant. It is the week’s machine-shaped counterweight to all those rooms full of patient, unrepeatable marks — and it exists, pointedly, for two hours only.

A Certain Slant of Light

Philip Martin Gallery gathers ten artists across generations and geographies — Carl Cheng, Holly Coulis, Tim Garwood, Sky Glabush, Pamela Jorden, David Korty, Aaron Morse, Hubert Schmalix, Sophie Treppendahl and Sung Jik Yang — for a show that borrows its title from Emily Dickinson and its mood from that particular light which makes an ordinary room suddenly strange. Working in painting, sculpture and assemblage, the group circles questions of interiority and private vision — what it means to make an art object now, and to ask a viewer to slow down in front of it. The result is less a thesis than a shared atmosphere, a slant of attention held across ten sensibilities.

We Breathe the Same Air

In its South LA rooms on West Florence Avenue, Rusha & Co. turns the gallery over to the Pioneers Co-Op for We Breathe the Same Air, a group exhibition that takes its title at its word — the air of a city held in common, the atmosphere no one owns and everyone shares. The Pioneers, an artist-run collective, treat the show as much a gathering as a hanging, the opening rounded out with bites from Bib Gourmand chef and artist Natalia Pereira, so that looking and eating and talking blur into a single social act. It is an exhibition staged less as a display than as an argument for the gallery as a shared table.

Downtown, François Ghebaly gives Patrick Jackson the whole room for a four-part installation of watching billboards, altered bus-shelter posters, and a lone mother-and-child statue that scales the street up to monument size only to jam its own signals. In Westwood, the Hammer Museum hands Chicago painter Mike Cloud a Hammer Projects commission built from bare stretcher bars and objects sunk into troweled oil paint, nudging the picture off the wall toward sculpture. And at LACMA, a focused survey reframes Pablo Picasso’s portraiture as a lifelong exercise in disguise, every lover and friend and self dissolving into harlequin, minotaur, and cipher. Hammer Projects: Mike Cloud

For its latest Hammer Projects commission, the Hammer Museum gives Chicago-based painter Mike Cloud a room built from bare stretcher bars — the wooden armature usually hidden behind a canvas — reassembled into polygons, stars, and open frameworks that push painting off the wall and toward sculpture. Objects surface from fields of thick, troweled oil, so that each work reads at once as picture and as accumulation, a container for whatever the artist has pressed into its skin. Cloud’s paintings ask what a painting is supposed to conceal, then decline to conceal any of it.

Floris Neusüss and Christiane Feser: Unique Works in Photography

Von Lintel Gallery pairs two German artists who set the camera aside entirely to ask what a photograph really is — Floris Neusüss, whose life-size photograms registered bodies and objects as ghostly silhouettes burned directly onto light-sensitive paper, and Christiane Feser, who folds, cuts, and pierces her prints into shallow reliefs that hover between picture and sculpture. Placed side by side, the two make a quiet argument that photography’s real subjects were always light, paper, and surface — the trace and the sheet it lands on — rather than whatever sits in front of a lens. It is a show about the medium caught touching the world with no shutter in between.

At Craig Krull Gallery, Holly Roberts continues her decades-long practice of painting directly onto photographs until the two media can no longer be pried apart, figures and animals surfacing in thick, worked oil from grounds that began as ordinary prints. Witness treats the photograph not as a finished image but as raw material — a surface to be buried, scraped back, and rebuilt until what emerges is equal parts document and dream. The pictures hold the uncanny stillness of both at once: the camera’s fixed instant and the slow deliberation of the painter’s hand.

Pablo Picasso — Portraits in Disguise

On the third floor of BCAM, LACMA gathers a focused survey of Pablo Picasso’s portraiture around a single restless idea — the face as something to be masked and remade rather than faithfully recorded. Across paintings and works on paper, lovers, friends, and the artist himself dissolve into harlequins, minotaurs, and geometric ciphers, each likeness a costume tried on and discarded. The exhibition makes the case that for Picasso the portrait was never about resemblance at all, but about the endless capacity of a face to become someone — or something — else.

Patrick Jackson: All Signs Fail

François Ghebaly hands Patrick Jackson the full gallery for All Signs Fail, a four-part installation that inflates the language of the street to the scale of a public monument — a towering billboard of watching eyes, a run of altered bus-shelter posters, a mother-and-child statue, and a single looming structure anchoring the room. Jackson borrows the visual grammar of advertising and civic signage precisely in order to jam it, staging a city that has lost the thread of its own messaging, where every sign points somewhere and none quite arrives. The effect lands as both comic and ominous — an urban environment turned inward on its own failure to speak.

In West Adams, Shoshana Wayne Gallery gives Shirley Tse and Dana Berman Duff — working together as Relational — the room for The Universe Breathes Us, where tidal pull and the simple fact of breath are turned into sculpture, sound, and projected film, the invisible forces between bodies rendered almost tangible. Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Beverly Hills winds the clock back too, with William Wegman: Private Show, vintage 1970s photographs and video from the years Wegman was inventing his deadpan conceptual grammar, hung alongside later work that extends it. And in Hollywood, Diane Rosenstein Gallery presents Trophies, David Hicks’ new glazed ceramic vessels — his ongoing clippings series pushed toward the fruit-heavy, the swollen, the almost-overripe.

Around these highlights the week fills in with a downtown frieze of 360 portraits, a forty-artist survey of landscape and escape, Douglas Gordon’s looped Zidane, a Punjabi sculptor’s first show outside India, and a one-night sound sculpture in Pasadena.

Vielmetter Los Angeles opens the summer with Ongoingness, a nineteen-artist group exhibition built around Pope.L’s Heaven (Vielmetter Version) and pitched as a reflection on the United States at its 250th anniversary — a subject too large and too contested for any single voice, handed here to nineteen. Across installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media, the show reads less as a thesis than as a chorus, its artists circling questions of belonging, myth, and unfinished national business without ever agreeing on the answers. It is the kind of exhibition that treats a country the way one might treat a difficult family — with attention, with argument, and without the comfort of a conclusion.

François Ghebaly turns back to a formative moment with Rapido, a focused presentation of rarely exhibited installation and works on paper that Alexis Smith made in the 1970s — the decade when her signature language of spliced text, found imagery, and the sun-bleached poetry of American vernacular first cohered. Made before the wall-spanning narrative installations that would define her, these early works catch the artist mid-invention, cutting and arranging the country’s throwaway culture into something wry and unexpectedly tender. Seen now, they read as both period document and origin story.

Shirley Tse & Dana Berman Duff: The Universe Breathes Us

At its West Adams space, Shoshana Wayne Gallery presents The Universe Breathes Us, a collaborative exhibition by Shirley Tse and Dana Berman Duff working under the shared name Relational, where the invisible traffic between bodies — tidal pull, shared air, the mechanics of breath — is translated into sculpture, sound, projected film, video, and installation. The two treat connection not as metaphor but as physics, building an environment in which the forces that ordinarily pass unnoticed between people are slowed down and made perceptible. The result asks the viewer to feel, rather than merely observe, the medium they are suspended in.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art mounts Private Show, a gathering of rare vintage photographs and video from the 1970s — the years when William Wegman was working out the deadpan conceptual grammar that would make his name — shown alongside later works that expand those early strategies. Before the polished, widely-loved Weimaraner portraits, Wegman was a restless maker of quick, funny, formally sharp gestures on paper, tape, and film, and this exhibition returns to that scrappier, more experimental register. It is a chance to see the wit before it hardened into a signature.

David Hicks: Trophies

Diane Rosenstein Gallery gives David Hicks his third solo show with Trophies, a suite of new glazed ceramic vessels drawn from his ongoing clippings series — forms that borrow the language of botany and abundance, swelling toward the ripe, the heavy, and the faintly excessive. Hicks treats the vessel less as a container than as a specimen, each glazed surface pooling and running like fruit caught at the edge of overripeness. Titled Trophies, the works carry a quiet irony about what we choose to keep, preserve, and put on display.

Over in West Hollywood, Regen Projects gives Alex Hubbard the room for Abstract or Regular?, poured and layered surfaces that treat abstraction as a process caught mid-decision — paint behaving like weather, resin like glass. Perrotin answers the season directly with Summerlove Sensation, a group show given over to youthful lust and longing, a dizzying affair with love itself; and at Nonaka-Hill, the late Brazilian-born Angeleno Kenzi Shiokava returns with the totemic assemblages he cut and carved from salvaged wood, railroad ties, and cast-off brooms — memory made vertical. Around them the week fills out with a Mexican modernist’s landscapes, seven artists reconsidering the Statue of Liberty’s contested promise, punch-cut paper, satirical flowers, and a historic downtown print gallery’s summer hang.

Odilon Redon: Otherworldly Visions

At the Getty Center, Otherworldly Visions gathers the charcoal noirs, lithographs, and luminous late pastels of Odilon Redon, the nineteenth-century French Symbolist who worked at the border between the seen and the dreamed. Flowers hover between botany and apparition, mythological figures surface from fields of velvety black, and color, when it finally arrives in the pastels, feels less like description than like light breaking through a closed eye. Free in the museum’s West Pavilion, the exhibition traces a career spent insisting that the imagination is a place one can actually go.

Mark Innerst: Paintings 1982–2024

Michael Kohn Gallery mounts Paintings 1982–2024, a four-decade survey of Mark Innerst’s shimmering, jewel-lit cityscapes and landscapes, where skylines and shorelines dissolve into atmosphere under a light that feels remembered rather than observed. Innerst builds his surfaces in fine, granular layers — often within artist-made frames that seal each picture like a reliquary — so that a river, a bridge, or a stand of trees registers as both crisp and half-hallucinated. Across the decades the work holds a single conviction: that a painting can slow the city down until it glows.

Alex Hubbard: Abstract or Regular?

Regen Projects gives Alex Hubbard the room for Abstract or Regular?, new paintings in which poured pigment, resin, and layered gesture are caught mid-decision — abstraction treated less as a finished style than as a process still visibly happening. Hubbard lets his materials behave like weather, pooling and skinning over and pulling against the support, so that each surface reads as a record of the forces that made it. The result is painting that keeps asking its own title’s question and refuses to settle on an answer.

Perrotin answers the season head-on with Summerlove Sensation, a group exhibition given over to youthful love, lust, and longing — what the gallery calls a dizzying affair with love itself. Across media and generations, the assembled artists chase the heat and comedy of desire, from the first glance to the inevitable heartbreak, in a show engineered for the particular delirium of a Los Angeles summer. It is light on its feet and unashamed of it.

Nonaka-Hill stages its second exhibition of Kenzi Shiokava, the late Brazilian-born Angeleno who spent decades transforming salvaged wood, railroad ties, and discarded brooms into totemic sculptures that stand somewhere between guardian figure and grave marker. Carved, charred, and bound, his columns carry the memory of the streets they came from — South Los Angeles lumber and cast-offs raised to the vertical dignity of the sacred. Shown here in concentrated form, the totems feel less made than summoned.

At David Kordansky, the Korean painter Moka Lee makes her US solo debut with Persona Works, portraits polished to a cool, near-photographic sheen that keeps sliding toward mask; downtown at Vielmetter, Esther Pearl Watson’s Celestial Road Trip maps the flora, fauna, and roadside strangeness of her Joshua Tree life, where the desert and the cosmic share a single horizon; and up in Hollywood, Wilding Cran gives Michael John Kelly’s NOTHING four canvases where broad brushwork is fractured and reassembled through pigment-print collage, the digital folded back into paint until abstraction hardens into something like an object.

William Turner Gallery marks the centennial of Ed Moses — Ferus Gallery veteran, restless dean of Los Angeles abstraction — with MOSES@100, a survey drawn across the six decades in which he treated the canvas as a laboratory rather than a destination, cracking, layering, dragging, and resurfacing paint until the picture became a record of its own making. Moses never settled into a signature, and the exhibition follows that refusal — grids dissolving into gesture, resin and pigment worried into geologic strata, the hand always testing what a surface can be made to hold. Mounted nearly a decade after his death and staged alongside son Andy Moses’s own light-driven abstractions, the show reads as a city taking the measure of a painter who helped teach it how to look.

California African American Museum | Exposition Park, Los Angeles
Willie Birch: Stories to Tell

The California African American Museum mounts the first career retrospective of Willie Birch, Stories to Tell, tracing nearly six decades of a New Orleans-born artist who has moved from early figurative painting through 1980s papier-mâché sculpture to the large-scale charcoal-and-acrylic works on paper that anchor his recent practice. Organized chronologically, the exhibition turns on Birch’s idea of “retentions” — the ways African traditions persist within Black American music, art, and daily life — and traces that persistence across changes in material as much as subject. Across the galleries the work asks why some cultural memories are kept and others let go, unearthing uncomfortable truths about American identity while holding open the possibility of a more expansive account of the stories we tell.

Moka Lee: Persona Works

In Persona Works, her first US solo exhibition, the South Korean painter Moka Lee treats the face as something assembled for viewing — portraits whose cool, near-photographic polish keeps sliding toward mask, the sitter culled from strangers’ social feeds and reassessed as aesthetic data. Lee builds each surface from a gesso underpainting scored and layered one translucent color at a time, a laminate finish that echoes the pass-by-pass logic of CMYK printing even as it registers the psychological strata her subjects try to conceal. Between the triviality of a selfie and the monumentality of oil paint, Persona Works stages the muddling of person and persona — beautiful, unnerving, and quietly suspicious of its own polish.

Esther Pearl Watson: Celestial Road Trip

Esther Pearl Watson returns to Vielmetter for Celestial Road Trip, a fourth solo built from new paintings and works on paper that map the flora, fauna, and roadside strangeness of her high-desert life around Joshua Tree. Watson works in a folk-narrative register thick with incident — hand-lettered signs, metallic skies, the odd hovering craft — where the everyday desert and the cosmic share a horizon line and neither takes precedence. The pictures read as travelogue and diary at once, tender and faintly deadpan, finding in the scrubland outside the studio door a whole cosmology of small wonders.

Michael John Kelly: NOTHING

Wilding Cran gives Michael John Kelly the room for NOTHING, four large canvases in which oil and acrylic are fractured by broad brushwork and then reassembled through pigment-print collage — the digital process folded back into paint until the two become indistinguishable. Kelly builds abstractions that behave like objects, imagined forms with a stubborn physical presence, drawing in equal measure on science fiction, the history of painting, and the post-punk wall of sound. What emerges is a post-human landscape traced in fragments, the sublime located improbably in the seams where the handmade and the machine-made meet.

Several Eternities in a Day: Form in the Age of Living Materials

The Hammer hands its galleries to twenty-two artists from North, Central, and South America for Several Eternities in a Day, a show built almost entirely from living materials — avocado, cacao, achiote, cochineal, stone, clay, and natural dyes. Organized by Pablo José Ramírez, the exhibition treats these substances as more than pigment or medium: they evolve, decay, drip, crumble, and evaporate, carrying the spirit and memory of Brown and Indigenous worlds in their chemistry. Across large-scale installation, painting, and mixed-media sculpture, the work reframes material itself as a record of the living and a repository of cosmic memory — art that is, quite literally, still changing on the wall.

Fútbol Is Life: Animated Sportraits by Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr.

Timed to the World Cup’s arrival in Los Angeles, LACMA’s Fútbol Is Life gathers the miniature “sportraits” of award-winning animator and visual-effects artist Lyndon J. Barrois, Sr. — meticulous little sculptures and stop-motion animations built from gum wrappers, glue, and paint. Barrois rebuilds iconic moments from women’s and men’s soccer at the scale of a tabletop, bringing a playful, emotional energy to the game’s grace and power. Rather than chasing spectacle or stardom, the show finds the world’s sport in the handmade and the intimate — the beautiful game reassembled one gum wrapper at a time.

The Expanding Field: MOCA’s Collection from the 1940s to 1970s

MOCA draws three decades out of its permanent collection for The Expanding Field, a survey of work from the 1940s through the 1970s that reads as an institution taking stock of the years just before it existed. Organized by senior curator Anna Katz, the show gathers recent acquisitions alongside longtime mainstays — a gallery of Mark Rothko canvases, an I Am painting by Luchita Hurtado, and works by Piet Mondrian, On Kawara, Robert Rauschenberg, Betye Saar, and Anne Truitt among them — to trace the experimentation and global awareness that shaped postwar art in the decades leading up to MOCA’s 1979 founding. It is a collection show that doubles as an argument about how Los Angeles learned to look.

Mika Tajima: 37 Dimensions

Pace gives Mika Tajima the run of its Los Angeles space for 37 Dimensions, a body of new installation and sculpture that continues the artist’s long project of making data physical — translating the invisible arithmetic that governs bodies, labor, and technology into things you can stand in front of and feel. Tajima has always worked at the seam where the systemic meets the sensuous, and here the language of measurement, sensing, and prediction is pulled out of the screen and given weight, temperature, and surface. What remains is the residue of a system rendered as form — abstraction that carries the fingerprint of the machinery that produced it.

Josh Cloud: Sunken Bust Shimmering Stone

Megan Mulrooney stages Sunken Bust Shimmering Stone, a solo turn by Josh Cloud in which sculpture is allowed to behave like geology — accretion and erosion, the slow chemistry by which stone acquires its shimmer and its scars. Cloud treats the made object as something weathered rather than fabricated, each surface carrying the evidence of pressure and time as if it had been dredged up rather than built. The result is a body of work that feels found: forms poised between figure and mineral, between the sculpted and the merely survived.

In Hollywood, Lisson Gallery gives Spencer Finch his first Los Angeles exhibition — more than fifty new works on paper gathered around a site-specific skylight and a monumental outdoor sculpture, an art built entirely from the way light arrives and the way memory holds it — while a few blocks over Make Room turns its rooms over to Austin Hayman’s Looking for a Friend, paintings of the artist’s actual friends in the actual rooms they inhabit, a quiet argument against the idea of Los Angeles as a city of surfaces. And downtown, Gallery Luisotti mounts a thirty-year survey of Toshio Shibata, whose large-format photographs of dams, spillways, and poured concrete press the infrastructure that disciplines water into something close to abstraction.

Stendahl’s World: Marketing Ancient Mexico and Modern Art in Los Angeles

At the Getty Research Institute, Stendahl’s World reconstructs the career of the Stendahl Galleries — the Los Angeles dealership that, across the middle decades of the twentieth century, sold the young city both Pre-Columbian antiquities and European modern art, often in the same breath. Drawing on the GRI’s archive of correspondence, photographs, catalogues, and objects, the exhibition follows how a single ambitious dealer shaped West Coast taste, moving Aztec and Maya works alongside Picasso and Diego Rivera and helping invent the very idea of Los Angeles as a place where ancient Mexico and the modernist avant-garde might hang on the same wall. It is a portrait of a salesman, and through him, of how a city learns what to collect.

Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity

LACMA traces a hundred years of transformation through clothing in Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity, gathering more than seventy garments and ensembles — among them the cheongsams of Shanghai and Hong Kong whose narrowing silhouettes and shifting cuts register the century’s upheavals as precisely as any written document. Moving from the late imperial period into the modern era, the exhibition reads dress as social history, the female body and what covered it becoming a site where tradition, commerce, colonialism, and emancipation were continuously renegotiated. It is a show about textiles that turns out to be a show about how a culture remade itself, one seam and hemline at a time.

Spencer Finch: Balboa of House and Garden

For his first exhibition in Los Angeles, Spencer Finch fills Lisson’s Hollywood space with more than fifty new works on paper, a site-specific skylight installation, and a monumental outdoor sculpture — an art that has always taken light itself as both subject and medium. Balboa of House and Garden extends his decades-long inquiry into perception and memory: the way a particular quality of afternoon light, or the color of a half-remembered sky, can be measured, transcribed, and set down on paper without ever quite being pinned in place. Finch works at the seam where optical science meets feeling, and the result is less a record of what a place looks like than of what it felt like to stand there and pay attention.

Looking for a Friend

Make Room gives Austin Hayman his debut solo presentation with Looking for a Friend, a suite of paintings built not from landmark occasions but from the unremarkable and the repeated — the sheets of a first apartment, a Monday walk taken the same way week after week, the hour light reliably reaches a window. Hayman paints his actual friends in the rooms they actually inhabit, surrounded by the objects that belong to them, each figure carrying the particular warmth of being seen and known. Against the city’s reputation as a place of surfaces and strategic encounters, the show makes its argument quietly and from the inside out: that Los Angeles is finally defined by the people you meet and the ordinary afternoons you spend with them.

Toshio Shibata: Concrete Poetry

Gallery Luisotti gathers more than thirty years of Toshio Shibata’s photographs into Concrete Poetry, a survey of the Japanese photographer’s lifelong attention to the places where engineering meets terrain — dams, spillways, weirs, and the poured-concrete channels built to discipline water as it moves through mountains. Shooting in large format and often from above, Shibata flattens these vast civil structures into nearly abstract fields of pattern and tone, the rush of a spillway reduced to silvered geometry, the hillside behind it pressed into the same plane. The title is exact: this is infrastructure rendered as composition, the unlovely machinery of flood control turned formal, still, and strangely lyrical.

Downtown, the week turns conceptual: The Broad stages Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, the most expansive West Coast account yet of an artist who built six decades of work from instructions, scores, and silences handed to the viewer to complete, while Patricia Sweetow Gallery lets Thomas Müller loose with what then pig, a barnyard of small pink ceramic pigs grappling with punctuation and letterforms in a deadpan meditation on the sheer physical weight of words. And just south, at the California African American Museum, The Sound of Gordon Parks uncovers the composer hidden inside the photographer — orchestral works, film scores, and rare demo recordings that reveal a creative life lived as much in the ear as in the eye.

At Nazarian / Curcio, Gabe Cortese’s House Guest gathers some twenty intimately scaled paintings whose narrative unspools across the room rather than within any single frame — a domestic story told in glimpses and held breath. Cortese works small and close, letting the modest dimensions concentrate the tension: interiors and figures that feel observed rather than staged, charged with the particular unease of being a guest in someone else’s space. After the week’s larger institutional voices, the show offers a deliberate contraction of scale, a reminder that a quiet painting can hold as much as a museum wing.

Gerald Jackson: The Rooftop Paintings at 255 Bowery

Parker Gallery turns its Hollywood space over to Gerald Jackson’s The Rooftop Paintings at 255 Bowery — a body of canvases made, as the title says, on a Bowery rooftop, carrying the looseness and light of work produced in the open air rather than the studio. Jackson’s improvisatory abstractions read as records of their own making, gesture and color layered with the freedom of painting done outside the usual systems. The exhibition gathers them as a quiet act of recovery, restoring a long-overlooked painter to view.

Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind

The most comprehensive survey of Yoko Ono’s work yet seen on the West Coast, Music of the Mind traces six decades of an art built less from objects than from instructions — scores, event scripts, films, and participatory works that hand the act of completion to the viewer. Moving from her early Fluxus circle to the global peace campaigns, the exhibition treats language and sound as sculptural material, a practice in which a single typed sentence can be a composition and silence is something to be performed. The Broad frames Ono not as a footnote to a more famous life but as one of the most radical conceptual artists of her generation — an argument made in whispers, instructions, and the open invitation to imagine.

Thomas Müller: what then pig

At Patricia Sweetow Gallery, Thomas Müller’s what then pig lets loose a covey of small pink ceramic pigs locked in struggle with punctuation, letterforms, and the stray symbols of written language — the artist’s continued inquiry into the physicality of words. The pigs are deadpan stand-ins for human chaos, gifted with reason yet bound to greed and impulse, and it is never quite clear whether they are the victims of language or its willing accomplices. Müller, who chairs the 3D art program at USC, renders the absurd with a sculptor’s precision, turning a barnyard joke into a quietly unsettling meditation on how meaning gets made and unmade.

California African American Museum | Exposition Park, Los Angeles
The Sound of Gordon Parks

Best known as the photographer who chronicled mid-century Black American life, Gordon Parks was also a composer — and The Sound of Gordon Parks is the first exhibition to take that side of him seriously. Developed with the Gordon Parks Foundation and Mario Sprouse, Parks’s longtime musical assistant, the show fills the museum with orchestral works, film scores, and rarely heard demo recordings, building an immersive soundscape around a creative life lived as much in the ear as in the eye. Curated by Justen LeRoy, it reframes a familiar figure as a multidisciplinary artist whose images, it turns out, always had a score running underneath.

Hospital of Emotions — Now On View in Los Angeles

A building within the St. Vincent Behavioral Health Campus has been transformed into a living museum of human emotion. Hospital of Emotions brings together 70 artists across 80 rooms and four floors, each room dedicated to a single emotion — from joy and love to fear, anger, hope, sadness, gratitude, and resilience. The artists work with the existing architecture — corridors, patient rooms, operating theatres, and nurses’ stations — so that the hospital itself becomes part of the artwork.

Presented by House of Art and Dreams with ROYVA Group and the St. Vincent Behavioral Health Campus. Currently on view for a limited time at 2131 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles. Tickets and information at hospitalofemotions.com.
