Daido Moriyama’s first major Los Angeles exhibition gathers the grainy, high-contrast street photography that made him one of the defining figures of postwar Japanese image-making — restless black-and-white frames shot on the move, where the camera behaves less like a recording device than a predator’s eye. The Hunter takes its title from that posture: Moriyama prowling the city for the accidental, the blurred, the half-seen, treating photography as an act of pursuit rather than composition. The prints carry the texture of their making — smeared light, hard grain, a world caught at speed — and Peter Fetterman’s Bergamot Station gallery frames that instinct as a single sustained chase.

Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons extends SUPERFLEX’s long-running interest in systems built for more than just humans — works that imagine the city as something shared with animals, microbes, and the non-human world, and treat play as a form of serious infrastructure. Sited inside one of LA’s foundational works of architecture, the exhibition stages a friction between modernist order and the collective’s cheerfully destabilizing proposals.

Object Poetry gathers human and non-human forms that watch, move, and respond, collapsing the distance between the thing looked at and the act of looking. Burns treats the everyday object as raw grammar — wired, rigged, and set in motion until the familiar becomes strange and the mechanical starts to feel almost alive.

David Zwirner in Melrose Hill/Hollywood reprises one of Southern California’s most consequential movements — Light and Space, the 1960s and ‘70s investigation into perception, atmosphere, and the physical behavior of light — and asks what it means to a generation of artists working now. The 21st Century Version gathers work that treats light not as subject but as material, with surfaces, volumes, and installations calibrated to the way the eye adjusts, doubts, and fills in what it cannot quite resolve. The exhibition reads as both homage and argument: that the region’s defining contribution to postwar art was never a style but a method of attention, one the current century has only made more urgent.

Keith Tyson: The Generative Universe

Keith Tyson has built a career on the conviction that the universe is not a fixed image but a generative system — a set of rules running forward into endless variation — and The Generative Universe gathers roughly three decades of painting, sculpture, and mixed media that test that idea against the discipline of the studio. Chance, mathematics, and material entropy collide across the work, with canvases that read like cosmological diagrams and objects that seem to have been grown rather than made, each one a snapshot of process caught mid-iteration. The exhibition argues, across its full sweep, that creation is less authorship than cultivation — the artist as a node in a system larger than any single hand.

Lyne Lapointe: In the Mood for Deviance

Lyne Lapointe works against the grain of the pristine surface, building images on salvaged wood, antique paper, and weathered material whose histories remain legible beneath the paint, and In the Mood for Deviance turns that method toward the body and its refusals. The exhibition reads as a quietly insurgent meditation — figures and fragments rendered on supports that have already lived a life, deviance treated not as transgression for its own sake but as the necessary slippage between what a body is told to be and what it insists on becoming. Lapointe’s surfaces carry the labor of looking and reworking, and the show makes a case for imperfection, accretion, and resistance as their own kind of beauty.

Nery Gabriel Lemus has long mined the textures of family, migration, and intimacy in work that moves fluidly between painting and mixed media, and One Becomes The Other takes the relational as both subject and structure — the way a parent becomes a child’s mirror, a lover becomes a stranger, a self is continually reshaped by the people it loves and loses. The exhibition’s title names a transformation rather than a fixed state, and Lemus builds the show around that instability, letting figures and domestic motifs dissolve into one another so that identity reads as a process of exchange rather than a possession. It is tender work with a sharp edge, attentive to how care and dependency bend the boundaries of the self.

Angela Lane: Phase Shift

Angela Lane makes small, intensely worked paintings that behave like apertures onto atmospheric thresholds, and Phase Shift gathers a body of work tuned to the moment one state tips into the next — dusk into dark, vapor into form, the perceptual edge where a landscape stops being a place and becomes a sensation of light. The title borrows the language of physics for what the paintings enact optically: a transition managed in increments so fine the eye registers the change before the mind names it. Lane’s restraint is the point — these are pictures that reward slow looking, the kind of canvases that seem to keep shifting the longer you stand in front of them.

Let’s Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar

Betye Saar’s assemblage practice has spent six decades turning found objects into instruments of memory, protest, and protection, and Let’s Get It On draws out the strand of that practice meant to be worn — adornments, talismans, and ritual garments that move the artist’s familiar vocabulary of charged material off the wall and onto the body. The exhibition treats wearable art not as accessory but as armor and inheritance, each piece a small portable shrine in which beadwork, fabric, and salvaged ephemera accumulate into something between costume and spell — a reminder that Saar has always understood the object as a vessel for what a culture refuses to forget.

A quieter centennial counterpoint to the Academy Museum’s archive exhibition (see below) arrives at Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica — A Silent Life gathers vintage photographic prints of Marilyn Monroe across her career, foregrounding the moments between performance and publicity where Fetterman’s photographers caught the actress as a working subject rather than a constructed image. The gallery’s longstanding emphasis on humanist black-and-white photography frames the centennial through the printed image rather than the costumed object, and the contrast with the Academy Museum’s institutional presentation gives readers two distinct registers in which to encounter the same icon this week.

Sprüth Magers marks a decade in Los Angeles with 10 Years LA!, an anniversary group exhibition that retraces ten years of gallery programming through the artists who have anchored it — Andreas Gursky, Cindy Sherman, John Baldessari, Sterling Ruby, Anne Imhof, and dozens more across painting, photography, sculpture, and installation. Less a survey than a curated reunion, the exhibition functions as a portrait of a single gallery’s relationship to the city it landed in, threading transatlantic conceptualism into LA’s expanded studio practice and making visible — through the accumulation of individual works — what a decade of consistent programming actually looks like as a constellation.

Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon

Opening on what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s centennial year, Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum gathers screen-worn costumes, personal items, photographs, and rare archival material into the most comprehensive institutional reckoning with Monroe’s career and afterlife yet mounted in Los Angeles. Running nine months through next February, the exhibition treats the actress not as a single mythic image but as a material archive — wardrobe, correspondence, makeup, scripts — that registers the labor underneath the icon, and the cost of that labor as it accumulated across a fifteen-year career compressed into mass cultural memory.

Six decades of daily ceramic practice arrive at the Marciano Art Foundation in a long-run institutional survey — Ninety-six and Pissed gathers small-scale vessels, plates, and figurines that Magdalena Suarez Frimkess has hand-glazed since the 1960s, a body of work built without fanfare and refused as a single autobiographical accumulation rather than a conventional career retrospective. Born in 1929 in Venezuela and working in Los Angeles since the 1970s, Frimkess treats the kiln as a journal — daily pieces marked by Pop iconography, comic-book line, ancient pottery references, and a strain of unsentimental humor that the title makes explicit.

Evan Holloway’s Roygbiv extends a decades-long sculptural vocabulary into a new chromatic register — branching armatures rendered in tree-like geometries and figural fragments cast in plaster, ash, bronze, and pigment, each work carrying the artist’s signature negotiation between hand and system. Running alongside Hilary Pecis’s Love Letters in the gallery’s second space (now in its closing weeks), Roygbiv consolidates Holloway’s interest in color-as-structure rather than surface — the rainbow not as decoration but as armature, an ordering principle around which sculpture organizes itself.

Vincent Pocsik: A Thousand Years

Vincent Pocsik’s second solo with Nazarian / Curcio debuts sixteen new sculptural works — wood, cast metals, stained glass, and fiber composed into hybrid forms that oscillate between Shaker discipline and surrealist disjunction, including the artist’s first functional pieces (a rocking chair, a standard chair, and umbrella-form stained-glass chandeliers suspended overhead). Drawing the exhibition title from a Shaker saying — do all your work as though you had a thousand years to live, and as you would if you knew you must die tomorrow — Pocsik recasts utility as a kind of devotion, with elongated anthropomorphic structures and joinery-honest furniture pushing the discipline of craft into a more psychologically charged, irrational terrain.

Edgar Arceneaux: We Are Gods

Edgar Arceneaux’s twelfth solo exhibition with Vielmetter Los Angeles arrives as a sustained inquiry rather than a single body of work — We Are Gods threads drawing, painting, installation, and text across the gallery’s spaces in pursuit of Black metaphysics as both subject and method. Building on Arceneaux’s longstanding interest in the intersections of cosmology, civil rights history, and material entropy, the exhibition locates the divine not in transcendence but in the labor of ordinary attention — with works that range from rust-stained canvases to recovered furniture rendered as ritual objects.

Maki Meets Mullican

Wolfpack HQ’s archive-exhibition series continues in Gardena with Maki Meets Mullican, a pairing that places photographic and printed material from the conceptualist Matt Mullican alongside work by the painter and printmaker Maki Na Kamura — two artists whose practices share a commitment to inventoried, sign-based vocabularies but diverge in their relationships to material and surface. Why this, why now? From Albrecht Dürer to Ed Ruscha, nearly 100 works by over 90 artists mark the 70th anniversary of the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. Five Centuries of Works on Paper celebrates one of the nation’s foremost collections, featuring prints, drawings, and photographs dating from the Renaissance to the present—including works by Rembrandt, Picasso, Käthe Kollwitz, Charles White, Ruth Asawa, David Hockney, and Toba Khedoori.

Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art

Prior to colonization, Native communities throughout Southern California used controlled fire practices to ensure the vitality of local ecosystems. Fire Kinship counters attitudes of fear around fire, arguing for a return to Indigenous practices through baskets, ollas, and canoes made possible by the relationship between people, place, and fire—alongside commissioned works by contemporary artists including Gerald Clarke Jr., Weshoyot Alvitre, and Leah Mata Fragua.

Made of acrylic paint and metallic leaf on fiberboard, the works may be positioned in any direction, with the shelf on which they rest becoming part of the piece.

While Bruce Conner is widely celebrated for assemblage and experimental film, drawing remained a critical site of investigation throughout his career. This concentrated selection spans the early 1960s through the 2000s, featuring meticulous inkblots produced through folding and mirroring techniques—articulations of natural symmetry, insects, bird and fish shapes into what Conner described as a “linear freedom of movement.”

6th Street: Group Exhibition featuring Javier Carrillo, Dan McCleary,
John Nava, and Victor Reyes

Thirty-three years ago, Dan McCleary moved into a studio on 6th Street near MacArthur Park—and later founded Art Division, a non-profit art school for underserved young adults. 6th Street brings together four members of that community: McCleary’s quotidian figure paintings, John Nava’s documentation of boarded-up storefronts that once served as canvases for political speech, and works by former students turned instructors Javier Carrillo and Victor Reyes, who honor Mexican and Chicano ancestry through street vendor portraits and phantasmagorical narratives.

Amanda Marchand and Leah Sobsey: This Earthen Door: Reimagining Emily Dickinson’s Herbarium

Emily Dickinson’s 19th-century botanical collection gets a contemporary reimagining in This Earthen Door. Artists Amanda Marchand and Leah Sobsey use the experimental anthotype printing process—plant-based photographs dating back to Dickinson’s era—to transform historical specimens into vibrant, modern works of photographic art, growing and harvesting plants to remake her flower sampler.

One hundred years ago, the Los Angeles Central Library opened its doors in downtown LA. Central 100 unfolds as a yearlong celebration through five exhibitions bringing together photographs, architectural drawings, and archival ephemera that chart the planning, construction, and ongoing evolution of this landmark civic project designed by Bertram Goodhue—a building envisioned as more than a place to house books.

Something is wrong with the figures. Not broken—altered. Across the gallery, bodies appear mid-thought, mid-injury, mid-revelation in this group exhibition featuring eleven artists including Nicola Samorì, Daniel Pitín, and Liang Fu. Anatomy is stretched, compressed, or interrupted—the body treated not as ideal or metaphor, but as something lived-in, vulnerable to distortion, memory, longing, and repetition.

Interlaced Communities: Indigenous Maya Art from Guatemala

Challenging narratives that sensationalize the Maya as people rooted in the past, Interlaced Communities brings together works by ten Indigenous artists from four Maya communities in Guatemala. The Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel painters—among the most important in the country—express and transmit their cultures by capturing traditions, daily experiences, worldviews, and the natural environment of the Guatemalan Highlands.

At Von Lintel Gallery, Anthony Friedkin’s Ex Post Facto brings together five decades of black-and-white photography chronicling surfing, gay life, and Hollywood, with Los Angeles itself as a generative force. M+B presents James Morse’s Prairie Cloth & Northern Pine, where childhood memory meets geometric abstraction and a life lived between carpentry and wilderness exploration. Over at Louis Stern Fine Arts, The Work is Never Finished honors Dr. Samella Lewis, whose prints and drawings channeled fury at racial injustice into symbolic visual expression. ICA LA continues Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s first US solo exhibition—four decades of drawings confronting subjugation through an ecofeminist sensibility steeped in myth. At Wolfpack HQ in Gardena, Zoe Koke engages landscape as a site of psychic projection alongside works by Luchita Hurtado and Lee Mullican. Anthony Friedkin: Ex Post Facto

For more than five decades, Anthony Friedkin has used the camera as a tool of personal discovery, embedding himself within the worlds he photographs. Ex Post Facto brings together selections from his most significant essays—The Gay Essay, The Surfing Essay, the Hollywood series—where Los Angeles itself remains a generative force, structuring how bodies move, how desire circulates, and how joyful living and risky business blur endlessly together.

James Morse: Prairie Cloth & Northern Pine

The act of looking backward becomes a methodology for moving forward in James Morse’s Prairie Cloth & Northern Pine. Working from his studio in Northport, Michigan, the artist mines the accumulated sediment of a life lived between multiple practices—carpentry, furniture making, wilderness exploration—to produce paintings that collapse temporal and spatial hierarchies with surprising fluency.

The Work is Never Finished: Prints, Drawings, and Paintings by Samella Lewis

Artist, educator, activist, and art historian Dr. Samella Lewis (1923–2022) conducted most of her career in service of others—yet her own artwork she made for herself. The Work is Never Finished presents prints, drawings, and paintings that channel her fury at racial injustice into symbolic visual expression, representing collective portraits of outrage, sorrow, and hope.

Joseph Sherman: SIKE!

Named for the slang word used to take back a statement at the last second, SIKE! adopts this logic as a way of thinking about how work is seen—setting up moments of belief that are later reversed through closer looking. Joseph Sherman’s collages built from yearbook photographs, encaustic paintings, and sculpture examine repetition, labor, and materiality, treating the grid not as neutral organizer but as material to be disrupted and rebuilt.

Eye Candy: Jite Agbro and Austin Uzor

Color draws the viewer in before unfolding into richer, more intricate stories in Eye Candy. Jite Agbro explores self-protection through non-verbal communication, clothing, and gesture, while Austin Uzor navigates the tension between having a home and feeling homeless through immersive, cinematic compositions that reconstruct spaces once familiar but now unrecognizable.

Koichi Enomoto: Broadcasting / Dreaming

Through his dual employment of manga and photorealism, Koichi Enomoto exposes the social behavior and ideologies undergirding Japanese—and by extension, all contemporary—culture. In Broadcasting / Dreaming, the Kanagawa-based artist derives his paintings from the rush of daily news, rendering them dense meditations on society’s ills with effects both cutting and humorous.

Michael Todd: Primary Objects

Mortality, sensuality, and the nature of being alive are compounded and neutralized in rounded planes and angled surfaces. In Primary Objects, Michael Todd returns to works first created in 1960s Paris and New York—objects he calls fetishes—and reexamines the echoes of their original intent, with intimate totems oscillating between the surreal and the carnal.

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: The Awake Volcanoes

A fire beats within. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s first US solo exhibition features four decades of drawings alongside etchings, paintings, and accordion-like paper sculptures exploring the relationship between the human body and the physical, psychological, and political landscapes it inhabits—confronting subjugation and censorship through an ecofeminist sensibility steeped in myth and mystery.

Zoe Koke: Blue Sky and Yellow Sunflower

Alongside works by Luchita Hurtado and Lee Mullican, Zoe Koke presents paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture that engage landscape and materiality as sites of psychic projection. In Blue Sky and Yellow Sunflower, the natural world becomes a medium of inner life, where landforms erode, dissolve, and reassemble, mirroring how human systems mark, exploit, and mythologize the earth.

Born out of workshops led by local historians and longtime Inland Empire residents, Black Brown in the Inland Empire and Beyond brings together artists who examined redlining, segregation, education inequity, and migration—creating work that responds directly to these historical truths and uplifts the voices of those who have long fought to be seen, heard, and remembered.
