It's no accident that some of the most important photography galleries in the country are here — Danziger Gallery, M+B, Peter Fetterman, ROSEGALLERY, Fahey/Klein, Curatorial Advisory — alongside institutions like The Getty and LACMA, whose photography collections rank among the most significant in the world. Fairs like the new SHOW.LA — a dedicated photography fair that launched its inaugural edition last month — are proof that LA’s commitment to photography as a fine art is deepening. Why this, why now? The photography world has excellent publications — L’Oeil de la Photographie delivers essential daily coverage, Aperture and Foam publish deeply considered quarterly issues, and the British Journal of Photography has been a vital voice since 1854. Beyond the fairs, galleries across the city are staging not-to-be-missed presentations. At M+B, Mariah Robertson’s Phase Shift offers a rare two-day-only exhibition during the gallery’s raw, mid-remodel moment—including the public debut of a risograph book ten years in the making. Lisson Gallery presents Leiko Ikemura’s first Los Angeles exhibition, where reclining figures merge into landscape-bodies divided by a monumental metallic mesh wave. Over at David Zwirner, Luc Tuymans makes his LA solo debut with The Fruit Basket, anchored by a sixteen-foot-tall, nine-panel painting exploring fracture and decay. Arguably the leading postmodern painter of the last forty-five years, David Salle returns to Los Angeles for his first solo exhibition in the city since 1997. My Frankenstein presents new paintings grounded in the art of juxtaposition—image clusters analogous to musical chords, where disparate styles are struck at the same time, producing an emotional resonance.

Strange Days of a Quiet Sun features paintings enriched through embroidery, beading, and hand-applied materials, alongside a monumental double-sided folding screen composed of eight individually painted canvases.

Heroic-scale depictions of humanity en masse pulse with movement, conflict, and transcendence in Cash-Cooper’s debut solo presentation. Domestic space becomes a complex of interiority, intrusion, and recovery in Natia Lemay’s first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Prior to colonization, Native communities throughout Southern California used controlled fire practices to ensure the vitality of local ecosystems. Thirty-three years ago, Dan McCleary moved into a studio on 6th Street near MacArthur Park—and later founded Art Division, a non-profit art school for underserved young adults. 6th Street brings together four members of that community: McCleary’s quotidian figure paintings, John Nava’s documentation of boarded-up storefronts that once served as canvases for political speech, and works by former students turned instructors Javier Carrillo and Victor Reyes, who honor Mexican and Chicano ancestry through street vendor portraits and phantasmagorical narratives.
