The artist's mixed media sculptures reflect a 20-year journey in response to her mother's Alzheimer's disease. Created in the spirit of the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi which finds beauty in the worn, impermanent, transient and imperfect, the works are assembled from reclaimed materials to form a new narrative, suggesting transformation and rebirth. Music and spoken word performances at 7pm during the opening reception.

Drawings and paintings by the Iranian-born artist look into the idea of revealing the figure as a psychological, emotional being, encountering its various internal states: violence, ecstasy, epiphany, emotional disturbance, mental illness, hypnotic/trance-like states, the dream state, mystical and out of body experiences. Two drawings by Abbassy are part of the permanent collection at LACMA, on view as part of the exhibition, Women Defining Women In Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond, through September 24, 2023.
