This Week in LA: Dec. 18→24
In this Edition: Personal Narratives and Collective Memory — From Soul Fire to Street Photography
This week’s exhibitions celebrate the power of personal narrative and collective memory. At Von Lintel Gallery, Miles Regis turns his expressive force toward an intimately personal story of ancestry and care in Soul Fire, a series of portraits capturing the enduring character of family and community. Beyond the Streets presents a landmark survey of Shepard Fairey’s printmaking practice, with over 400 screen prints demonstrating the democratic power of ink and paper to provoke dialogue and spark action. At 839 in Hollywood, Yunghun Yoo’s paintings frame LA’s transit infrastructure as a circulatory system, exploring how we move through and inhabit urban space.
Hauser & Wirth debuts Flora Yukhnovich’s Bacchanalia, large-scale canvases where lush brushstrokes evoke the dynamism of ancient and contemporary hedonism. Over at ICA LA, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s first US solo exhibition presents four decades of drawings exploring the relationship between body and landscape through an ecofeminist lens. Luis De Jesus unveils rarely seen street photography by John M. Valadez, capturing the style, pride, and lived Chicano reality of 1970s and 80s Los Angeles. And at the Orange County Museum of Art, the California Biennial shines a light on the richness and anxiety of late adolescence.
🎄A quick note: Since next week’s edition falls on Christmas Day, we’ll be sending out a special “Best Of” issue highlighting standout ongoing exhibitions we’ve covered this year that are still on view. You’ll receive it on Tuesday, December 23—a perfect guide for your holiday gallery outings!
