This week turns on transition and the long view — paintings caught at a threshold, assemblage carried into its sixth decade, and a run of Downtown openings that treat material as something always mid-change. Anat Ebgi opens Angela Lane’s Phase Shift, atmospheric paintings tuned to the moment one state of light or matter tips into the next — the perceptual edge where a landscape stops being a place and becomes a sensation. Roberts Projects presents Let’s Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar — the assemblage matriarch’s adornments, talismans, and ritual garments gathered as a body of work that has always treated the object as a carrier of memory and protection.
Hauser & Wirth Downtown opens Keith Tyson’s The Generative Universe, three decades of painting, sculpture, and mixed media built on chance, system, and the idea that the cosmos is less a picture than an engine that keeps producing. Vielmetter Los Angeles gives Lyne Lapointe In the Mood for Deviance, salvaged surfaces and found material reworked into a quietly insurgent meditation on the body and its refusals. And Charlie James Gallery debuts Nery Gabriel Lemus’s One Becomes The Other, a painter’s inquiry into family, intimacy, and the way relation reshapes the self. Across Los Angeles, Mid-Wilshire, West Hollywood, and Downtown, the through-line is recovery and change — deep practices resurfacing, and new work caught mid-turn.

Keith Tyson: The Generative Universe

Keith Tyson has built a career on the conviction that the universe is not a fixed image but a generative system — a set of rules running forward into endless variation — and The Generative Universe gathers roughly three decades of painting, sculpture, and mixed media that test that idea against the discipline of the studio. Chance, mathematics, and material entropy collide across the work, with canvases that read like cosmological diagrams and objects that seem to have been grown rather than made, each one a snapshot of process caught mid-iteration. The exhibition argues, across its full sweep, that creation is less authorship than cultivation — the artist as a node in a system larger than any single hand.

Lyne Lapointe: In the Mood for Deviance

Lyne Lapointe works against the grain of the pristine surface, building images on salvaged wood, antique paper, and weathered material whose histories remain legible beneath the paint, and In the Mood for Deviance turns that method toward the body and its refusals. The exhibition reads as a quietly insurgent meditation — figures and fragments rendered on supports that have already lived a life, deviance treated not as transgression for its own sake but as the necessary slippage between what a body is told to be and what it insists on becoming. Lapointe’s surfaces carry the labor of looking and reworking, and the show makes a case for imperfection, accretion, and resistance as their own kind of beauty.

Nery Gabriel Lemus: One Becomes The Other

Nery Gabriel Lemus has long mined the textures of family, migration, and intimacy in work that moves fluidly between painting and mixed media, and One Becomes The Other takes the relational as both subject and structure — the way a parent becomes a child’s mirror, a lover becomes a stranger, a self is continually reshaped by the people it loves and loses. The exhibition’s title names a transformation rather than a fixed state, and Lemus builds the show around that instability, letting figures and domestic motifs dissolve into one another so that identity reads as a process of exchange rather than a possession. It is tender work with a sharp edge, attentive to how care and dependency bend the boundaries of the self.

Angela Lane: Phase Shift

Angela Lane makes small, intensely worked paintings that behave like apertures onto atmospheric thresholds, and Phase Shift gathers a body of work tuned to the moment one state tips into the next — dusk into dark, vapor into form, the perceptual edge where a landscape stops being a place and becomes a sensation of light. The title borrows the language of physics for what the paintings enact optically: a transition managed in increments so fine the eye registers the change before the mind names it. Lane’s restraint is the point — these are pictures that reward slow looking, the kind of canvases that seem to keep shifting the longer you stand in front of them.

Let’s Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar

Betye Saar’s assemblage practice has spent six decades turning found objects into instruments of memory, protest, and protection, and Let’s Get It On draws out the strand of that practice meant to be worn — adornments, talismans, and ritual garments that move the artist’s familiar vocabulary of charged material off the wall and onto the body. The exhibition treats wearable art not as accessory but as armor and inheritance, each piece a small portable shrine in which beadwork, fabric, and salvaged ephemera accumulate into something between costume and spell — a reminder that Saar has always understood the object as a vessel for what a culture refuses to forget.
