This Week in LA: March. 12→18
In this Edition: Colonial Legacies, Salvaged Language, and Skateboard Culture — Photography, Sculpture, and Installation Across LA
This week’s exhibitions move between memory and material, capturing light on film, language in salvaged letters, and identity pressed into glass, land, and rhythm. At ROSEGALLERY, Renee Royale and Binh Danh contend with how bodies, land, and memory are shaped by power through a two-person show grounded in colonial legacies and extraction. Ruby Bell’s Glow at Leica Gallery finds the luminescent energy of her subjects behind the scenes on motion shoots — from music videos to galas to narrative films. And Craft in America opens Vehicles of Expression, a landmark exhibition presenting the skateboard as material culture and handcrafted artistic expression.
Robert Barry turns 90, and Timothy Hawkinson Gallery celebrates with Another Time..., where the conceptual art legend’s newest paintings remain generously open-ended — inviting audiences into their own reveries on time. JR’s first solo show at Perrotin Los Angeles, Horizons, draws from border walls, prison yards, and city facades across California to explore visibility, community, and the shifting meaning of perspective. At Regen Projects, Jack Pierson’s Curtains foregrounds his decades-long investigation into the poetic and ironic qualities of language through word sculptures and seventy dreamlike works on paper. And Berta Fischer’s shimmering suspended sculptures at James Fuentes Gallery transform transparency, color, and spatial perception into an ever-changing visual experience.
